Tom Cancelleri
Badass! Now go sharpen those blades (all you need is to add a micro bevel) also, turn the hook on the #80 with a burnisher. You're gonna love those hand tools. Sent from my 831C using Tapatalk

shaneymack
Today was one of those days in the shop. I didn't get alot done on the chest but I got a bunch of shop cleaning, machine tweaking, organising, and sharpening done.Got the new pm-v11 irons razor sharp;I gave the Low angle jack a test drive flattening some poplar;Tried out the Bevel up smoother on some walnut, couldn't believe the glass finish! (minus some lines it left from me not cambering the blade enough);I got a little organizing done. Made a "Lee Valley" drawer lol; Back to the chest of drawers....I got the bottom shimmed up and the last runner installed; And most of the poplar for the drawers all milled up. It was all from 8/4 stock so lots of resawing and drum sanding. Not a super productive day on the chest but it was good spending some time sharpening all my blades and playing with the new toys. Hopefully I will have a chance to get the cherry drawer fronts milled up tomorrow.

wnaziri
Looking great Shaney.Your project has helped me make a decision. If you have seen my posts, I did the chest of drawers with mahogany, which turned out a little better than I expected. However, I chose to make the plain vanilla version. I think I am ready to do one like yours with some curves, which makes a BIG difference. I think I will use walnut similar to your project. I think I am going to make one change: for the lighter, secondary wood, I have this urge to use madrone. Keep posting pics. I am learning a lot. The tool porn is nice too Oh, and the chest looks phenomenal. You're doing a great job. Now bust out that Leigh jig and get to work on those drawers! wdwerker
Practice on scrap ! Make sure it is dimensioned to the exact same thickness.First get making a single corner successfully, then try a sample drawer before tackling the drawers for your project.Very exact lengths and square ends will help the drawer come out well.
Eric.
The coolest part is that you took the time to resaw and bookmatch the BACK panels...something no one will ever see. That's heart, and what sets a piece apart from the rest of the rubbish.

That's heart, and what sets a piece apart from the rest of the rubbish. Thanks Eric. Im a little anal i guess. All my poplar for the drawers is all from the same board and bookmatched left side of drawer and right side of drawer. Little details i want to impress my little girl with when she is old enough to understand. Hopefully she will appreciate the time I put in it for her.
wdwerker
Remember to sign and date it. Include a few finish notes so it can be touched up in the future.i always label the back of drawers what the position is from bottom to top too. rodger.
This is what the wife just brought back for me from Lee Valley! Some sweeeeet toys! You are gonna love those planes! The BU jack is a workhorse in my shop and gets used on every project. I also love that smoother, yet I don't own it yet (i have the standard No 4).That marking gauge is another winner! shaneymack
Got to work today on milling the cherry for the drawer fronts. The bottom two drawer fronts are wider than my jointer so I took out the LAJ and flattened one side by hand. It was around 40C with the humidity today so i was sweating.I wanted the upper two drawers that are next to each other to have continual grain so i resawed and will book match end for end.The quality resaw that comes off this saw still blows my mind every time. Perfect. Here are the upper drawers fronts next to each other. All the cherry i bought was 6/4 because i was thinking i would resaw and use one piece for the drawer fronts and one piece for the back panels. I ended up using other cherry for the back panels so now i have some extra 1/2" cherry for something else.Resawing big lower drawer front. I can't even make this saw sweat at all no matter how fast i feed the wood. Here are all the drawer fronts layed out how they will be on the chest.I will let the cherry sit stickered for a day or two and final dimension it. All the other parts are ready to be dovetailed. The 8/4 poplar in the picture is for the solid drawer bottoms. All bottoms will be book matched with a center cherry rail that will double as the drawer slide as well. Since the next step is dovetailing, I pulled the D4R out of the box and assembled it. Once the cherry fronts are final milled I will start running some test pieces through this thing and see how it goes. Cant wait to try it. Im doing half blind on the front and through DT on the back. Should be fun! Edited September 7, 2015 by shaneymack
