bgreenb
Awesome job Shane. Looks better every time you post an update. Very cool idea for the drawer slides and solid wood bottoms. I'll be stealing that in the future - appreciate the thorough documentation. The pic of the full length end grain shaving was great too...

Popular Post shaneymack
Been a while since the last update, here we go!I glued up the poplar for the drawer bottoms. I needed to resaw the drawer bottom stock which was almost 16" wide so i built a 12" resaw fence. The stock to be resawed Got to it! Awseome finish straight off the saw Got all the drawers assembles I really like the bookmatched bottoms. Im glad i took the extra time to do it. I glued up the top and then resawed it to achieve a bookmatch. Then flattened it with the #80 I beveled the bottom. Started by marking edge and bottom to know where to stop planing. Used the low angle jack and the bevel up smoother which made the job easy. Sanded the top final and put one coat of danish oil. At this point it was onto the drawer pull design. I had an idea in my head and turned a prototype on the lathe. Looked ok but was too fragile. I was going to try again making it thicker but speaking with Eric one day changed my mind. He said his nightstand pull design would look great on this chest. I checked out the photos and agreed. He said i could steal his design and even provided me with a sketch. He practically built them for me, so i cant take much credit for the pulls. Here they are.I glued up the walnut pull to 2 cherry supports with a bridle joint. Out of the clamp i started with this Made a template for the curve and traced it on all 4 sides and cut it at the bandsaw. Final shaping with rasp Handle in the pic is only on the drawer front with 2 sided tape. Its also not final sanded yet. Pretty consistent I want the pulls for the 2 top drawers to be a little different so i made a prototype of a single central support with the same design. Looks ok on its own but doesn't work with the other handles. Too thick in the middle due to the central support. Back to the drawing board. I am going to try another one tomorrow. Just a scaled down version of the other ones. I have a prototype glued up. Can't believe i can actually see the end of this project!
bgreenb
Shane that's looking awesome man. You've thrown everything but the kitchen sink in this project. The book matched bottoms are a nice touch. And I really like the drawer slide design - I'll definitely be using that in the future. Your daughter will be psyched. Has she seen it at all?

Woodenskye
Shane everything looks great, I like the prototype pulls for the top drawers, but agree a less chunky design would be best. Truly is a fantastic project!
