JohnG Posted May 14, 2024 Report Posted May 14, 2024 Originally there were #0 through #12. #0 started at .06” diameter and each number went up in increments of .013”. Now you mostly only see #6, 8, 10, 12. I would guess that the sizes and increments were tied to the tools/equipment they had available at the time it was established, but I haven’t ever heard the real reasoning behind it. 1 Quote
Coop Posted May 14, 2024 Report Posted May 14, 2024 I have a visual guide that shows the diameter of the screw head and it doesn’t line up with the measurement that I get when I mic mine. I usually buy mine from Lowe’s or HD and that may be the prob. I’ve recently read that some of you buy yours from “ a more reliable source”. In doing so, does this give you a better screw as far as strength and consistency or just a better price? 2 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted May 14, 2024 Report Posted May 14, 2024 I think a "more reliable source" will probably yield a better quality screw than the places you mentioned, which are generally "more economic sources". Quote
Tom King Posted May 14, 2024 Report Posted May 14, 2024 I think that chart was good when wood screws were made in America like we knew them for a Long time. Since they've changed to being manufactured in China and packaged in Mexico, they make them like they want to and not like they used to be. Quote
Mark J Posted May 20, 2024 Report Posted May 20, 2024 Anybody hear from @Coop? Lot of weather in his "hood" makin' the news. 1 Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted May 21, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted May 21, 2024 Hey Mark, we live on the east side of downtown where usually we’re the ones that get the flooding and power outages if the skies get dark but, not this time. Downtown and surrounding area and the NW side of town got beat up pretty badly though. My son works for the power company and they have been working 16 hour days to restore power to those less fortunate. Thanks for asking. 3 Quote
Mark J Posted May 21, 2024 Report Posted May 21, 2024 We're glad to hear you guys are all right. Sorry to hear about the other parts of town, though. 2 Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted May 30, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted May 30, 2024 A non woodworking neighbor sent me this. Interesting. 4 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted May 30, 2024 Report Posted May 30, 2024 I've seen this guy in a lot of YT 'Shorts', making similar joints. Usually with Festool, though. 2 Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted October 3, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted October 3, 2024 It’s been kinda slow here on the forum. Perhaps woodworking has taken hind seat to fall gardening and tomatoes? 5 Quote
Popular Post wtnhighlander Posted October 3, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted October 3, 2024 @Coop, I've had a couple of small projects going, just not journal-worthy. First time using powlonia / kiri(?) wood. Very different, but nice looking. Too bad the project was intended for paint! 3 Quote
Popular Post Von Posted October 3, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted October 3, 2024 Yeah, between a parade of viruses, family stuff and volunteer work, my shop is just collecting the boring kinda of dust the last ~6 weeks. I did read the Lost Art Press Workshop Wound Care book and order myself odds and ends to flush out my first aid kit. 4 Quote

I feel like I've had at least one kid sick with something every other week since school started. Now I want to buy that book and get stocked up. My wife isn't the most level-headed person in situations like that so having things prepared would help. No kidding. Thankfully my meeting next week was changed from in-person to virtual or else I would have been flying out Sunday and home Thursday night to the UK. 4 AM calls two days in a row next week should be fun. My other work trip later in the month was shortened from Sun-Friday night to Tue-Thur. Spending a lot of time listening to woodworking podcasts as I shuttle kids around to sports. Was half debating on taking up spoon carving on nice nights while I wait for my daughter at her dance class. Figure it will be dark in a month though. Guess I'll stick to errands and reading during it. 5 Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted October 15, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted October 15, 2024 I think I might have found my next project in the December edition of FWW. Not that I need another chair but the uniqueness of the “Walnut Easy Chair with a Slung-Tile Seat” caught my attention. 3 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted October 15, 2024 Report Posted October 15, 2024 Got a pic, @Coop? I'm not a subscriber, but that chair sounds interesting. Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted October 15, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted October 15, 2024 Not exactly the shape of the chair but the back and seat “tiles” that are intriguing. 5 1 Quote

That chair would be a nice addition to that live edge table you just finished, and won't show us. 3 Quote

Great idea. I’ve been a slacker on the table. I did get the figure 8’s installed today and weather permitting, will spray a couple of clear coats tomorrow . 6 Quote
