Popular Post Willy
It took a lot longer than I planned but my clock is finally done. This is my first major furniture project. I’ve always wanted a grandfather clock and had planned on buying one that a co-worker was selling. I had to go out of town that weekend and when I got back she had sold it to someone else. Actually did me a favor because I found these plans and decided to build one myself. It’s a plan from American Furniture Design (now found on Lee Valley website). The movement was purchased from Klockit. I used red oak for most of the structure except for the back, bottom, and top panels where I used ¾ plywood. The plans had a color picture on the outside and I really liked the finish it had. It seemed to sort of glow. I couldn’t find a stain that gave the same effect, so I decided to first dye the wood orange, then apply stain hoping to get that glow. It ended up being a very good match. The only pieces I didn’t make myself was the crown around the very top. I bought that trim and cut it to size. Very happy how it all turned out, and very happy it’s finally done. On to the next project.

treeslayer
beautiful work Willy, what movement did you use? I've been wanting to build one for a while but the price of a movement always scares me back to reality, like $600.00 for a 7 day movement. Ronn W
I would love to make one of those but don't have a place to put it. That will be a family heirloom. Don't forget to sign and date ti somewhere (not across the face). I like it.

woodbutcher74
Beautiful Work !! You'll get a sense of pride every time you walk into the room. Way better than buying the clock. Watch out, there will probably be a Bunny Rabbit, a Mister Moose and an older gentleman wearing Green Jeans showing up.
wtnhighlander
Beautiful work, Willy! Your color choices worked very well on the red oak.

Willy
Thank you all for the wonderful comments. The family is fighting over who will get the clock when the time comes. They better start being really nice to me. @ treeslayer the movement is item #13044 on the Klockit site. It's a cable driven unit. The pendulum is #20024 and the weight shells are #13094 and the dial face is #26930. I luckily had a 15% coupon which really helped with the price. Ended up around $620. Chestnut
Willy that clock looks great! i like the subtle details. Don't sweat the purchased trim on the top, I'd have never known for starters. Secondly it's probably better that way trim is a PITA in my opinion. Did you make the bottom yourself? Willy
Yes I made the bottom cove myself on the table saw. Found a calculator on the web and did a bunch of checking. Was nervous about that one since I had only one piece of wood to use.
gee-dub
Wonderful. Reminds me of a childhood song: My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf, So it stood ninety years on the floor; It was taller by half than the old man himself, Though it weighed not a pennyweight more. It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born, And was always his treasure and pride; But it stopped short — never to go again — When the old man died. Ninety years without slumbering (tick, tock, tick, tock), His life's seconds numbering, (tick, tock, tick, tock), It stopped short — never to go again — When the old man died. Do you ever realize how morbid some of our nursery rhymes were?
