What did you do today?

I’ve gotta work on the inside the house today. With the  extreme heat, ants are coming in. Try and get in the shop today and clear enough room to cut 4x8 sheets on the  table saw. My sliders and RAS only cut 14”, so that’s out..

I'm also avoiding the outdoors today. High of 97 with a heat index of 111. Hopefully the kids survive outdoor day camp today. They'll be at the pool for at least half of it.

Just had a contractor finish up repairing the drywall and painting from our leak. Glad I hired it out so I didn't get dust all over our kitchen. Learned a lot from watching him for the next time. Very ready to get everything back where it should go and all tools put away.

I only work outside in the mornings, and in the shade, unless I'm cutting grass on a riding mower or tractor, but do that early too.

Made myself some fried eggs this morning.wife misplaced the regular pepper shaker. Looked in the cabinet and found “Restaurant style pepper” Put it on. Won’t make that mistake again.

Home Depot is clearing out Klein tools since they’re moving to Lowe’s. Picked up a set of linesman pliers for 25% off. Not everything Klein is on sale.

I'm still using some Klein linesman pliers, as well as other Klein tools, 47 years old, that I bought new. I remember because I took night classes at the Community College to prepare for taking the Electricians licensing test in 1976, and that's when I bought them.

Back to working on my shop cabinet today, basically a chest of six drawers that is very needed.  One thing I did differently, inspired by the spiffy new track saw, is instead of trying to measure dado/rabbet depths and calculate lengths, I just left pieces long on the front and top, dry-fitted stuff, marked actual lengths, and then took pieces out and and cut them.

Carcass is assembled. Next steps are drawers and then the top.

Finally finished up getting our bathroom back together after it was fixed. We decided not to rehang a cabinet so I patched the holes and repainted. Sink stopper was broken and I ended up having to replace the whole sink drain and stopper.  
 

Glad to have the tools away.

Some stuff had to match to start for a dry fit to start. I cut the sides and bottom to the same width on the table saw and cut the bottom to a measured length. I put rabbets on all three for the back and then dry fit them to mark the back for length to match the bottom (in theory they should have been identical and were very close).

Then with the back dry fitted, I dry fit the middle. Then I marked a common height on the back, sides and middle, and also marked the depth on the middle to match the bottom.

I hadn’t done cabinets in so long, I forgot I wa# out of 1 1/8-1 1/4 Senco staples. I ended up using 1 1/2…

While working on the shave horse I finished the final prep on the chair. First I sharpened a chisel then slowly sliced them all flat before following up with a sharpened scraper.

All ready for the milk paint finish.

Oh and I smoked some ribs too

That sure seems like a fun task.

I filled a bunch of holes in the swiss-cheese that's now my shop walls/ceiling. I'm sure there will still be loads of holes and I'm not painting the patches but was tired of looking at all the holes.

Spent the whole day cleaning the grand daughters bedroom. We didn’t have that many toys when I was a kid. I had a big wheel, a bag of green army men,  12” tall GI Joes and a yard full of dirt. Lots of dirt and imagination..

That’s what our parents say about our kids, yet they are the ones always showing up with more toys. “Too bad they don’t have any toys to play with” they say facetiously.

Over the last two days I was able to get the chair prepped for finish

First coat of red

A light rub down with Mirka pad and then coat two of red

Another Mirka rub down then two coats of black and three coats of oil, poly, mineral spirt blend and this will be done. With milk paint it almost takes longer to finish it then build it
