Popular Post pkinneb
Well I dove into the deep end of the pool tonight and entered my first piece (Jewelry Chest) into the Minnesota Woodworkers Guild annual Northern Woods Exhibition April 25-28th This is way out of my comfort zone but in an effort to push myself even further in my woodworking I thought it might be helpful to get feedback from woodworkers much more talented than I as well as from the public. Here's hoping I don't regret this LOL
Chestnut
I'll be heading down there to check it out. I don't think that you have any thing to worry about. It seemed like there was work from all levels there last year. I know you won't be the worst, well maybe i don't know if Cremona is entering anything . I wanted to enter the 8 Drawer dresser that i made but i got a really nasty look when i asked if it could be emptied so i could enter it in the exhibit. Maybe next year. Coop
I don’t have any idea what you’re up against but as a betting man, I ‘d say you’re entering with at least a full house. Good luck!
Byrdie
Certainly nothing to be embarrassed about. I think you'll be representing yourself pretty well!
RichardA
There's not a chance that you'll regret entering, it's a beautiful and well done piece.
Mark J
Like Rick says. Are there categories to the competition like large, small, carved, turned, etc?
pkinneb
Thanks guys! Yes many categories and both amateur and professional woodworkers. The work shown at these exhibitions over the years is simply amazing https://www.mnwwg.org/nwds.html For me just putting my work out there is a huge step and really the point. I don't expect to win just wanted to get outside my comfort zone and hope to get some feedback that can improve my work going forward. drzaius
That's a beautiful piece that you've entered. I don't think I'd have the balls to do that.

I submitted one of my pieces to an American Assoc. of Woodturners competition. I figured for the small entry fee I'd find out what the rejection letter looked like -- they could have done better .
Minnesota Steve
I think that looks great. Yeah there's all sorts of different pieces. I hope to make it down this year... My wife is out of town so I'll have to talk the kids into going for ice cream or something. :-)

Bmac
Matt Cremona posted a quick video of this event and a link to the show's program/catalog of entrees. Since I live on the East Coast, it was great to get a feel of this event through the video and the program. Paul, your piece looks great, right up there with the best entrees. I agree with what you wrote in the program that sharing a piece with the public is another step in your woodworking journey. Getting out of that comfort zone is the only way to grow. Great job!

Popular Post pkinneb
Thanks all! My final take is it was well worth the effort. The best part for me was the group session on Sunday afternoon where we walked around with Scott Grove https://imaginegrove.com/about/ as he critiqued our pieces. There were about 20 people signed up to walk along and listen/question him as he critiqued our pieces it was very insightful for me. I didn't win any of the categories but received good marks and feedback from the judges.
Mick S
Congrats, Paul! Very impressive piece. Hopefully you'll not be shy about putting your next piece(s) in!
Chet
Thats some pretty positive feed back. You have to be pretty happy with the results of your first entry. "All edges are a bit too crisp" Was this a suggestion to ease the edges a little more during finish prep?
Mark J
Clearly these were former Soviet Olympic judges. "Edges a bit too crisp" !! really
