new2woodwrk Posted January 11, 2018 Report Share Posted January 11, 2018 Many forums, and one of my favorite threads in them has a thread such as this and I'm surprised there isn't one such as this here. Visitors and members would post with whatever topic or event occurred to them and others would chime in their 2 cents worth and their events. It doesn't necessarily have to be about woodworking - hence the location in Off-Topic. It could be about plumbing, a car, a DIY house issue, going for an operation anything really. It gives members an opportunity to "experience" the lives of others in a casual thread. For example: Today, I'm going to add a few coats of Varathane to my cabinets, work some more on my dust system for my rolling carts and start building a downdraft sanding box. Please feel free to elaborate, enquiring minds...... I have my power tools on rolling carts. Here is an example of the carts I make: Miter Saw Cart I have them lined up in my garage/shop. Along one side, I'm running some PVC "Y" connectors with some tubing I've had (it's spiral, I know I should use straight but it's what I have) and blast gates. I'm making each cart independent (not gluing the pvc) so I can move them around when needed. I'll post some pics later after I get back from running errands and the lacquer finishing... Right now to a rigid shop vac - but I also have a HF 3 hp dust system as well. I'm probably going to keep them hooked to the shop vac and run the TS alone on the HF 3hp vac. I did get a new stud finder, it's about 6" wide and has 60 sensors, so 3 LED's light up and show you both edges and the center of the stud. For the past few months I have been working on my own lightsaber. Basically you build a hilt out of whatever, than you stuff it full of electronics so it lights up, makes sounds. The blade flickers, and if it hits something it makes a different sound. The blade is a polycarbonate tube strong enough you could duel with it. I have been working on my second lightsaber lately. No calibration ,push the button, put it on the wall and it reads instantly. I always have 2 or 3 ball magnets on my belt but plenty of times a stud is there but there aren't any nails in it. Got a lot of drapery rods to hang at the girlfriends house. I'm pretty sure the builder/drywall crew used glue to hang the sheets with fewer fasteners. I hate hanging rods on drywall anchors ! After this weekend I will let y'all know what I think of it. I don't see it detecting electricity as being a feature. Long cabinet hanging screws and wires are a bad mix. Time will tell. They could see where the wide studs were on each side of the old opening, and where the header was by the lights. wdwerker Posted January 12, 2018 Report Share Posted January 12, 2018 They claim it can read 1.7" deep. Reviews say 1.25" is more realistic, but that's plenty deep for most of my work. I really like the wide display that can show where multiple closely spaced studs are in relation to each other. I wonder if it works vertically in narrow locations?
