Popular Post Dknapp34
My wife is on the board of a local charity and I was asked if I would make something for the silent auction at their annual gala. This is what I came up with. Walnut and brass serving set. Figured walnut serving tray with brass pins. Walnut cheese board with brass inlay. Set of four walnut and brass inlay coasters. The serving tray below is version 3. The first one looked nice but the sides were a little thin and I wasn't confident in its strength. Also, the compound angle joints were less than perfect. For version 2, I beefed up the sides and the joinery was really tight, but the sides were a bit too beefy and I wasn't happy with the shape. For version 3, I landed on a happy medium between versions 1 and 2 for the side thickness and I made a little curve along the long sides, which I think gives it a better shape. The finish for the serving tray and cheese board is Odie's oil. I wanted something a little more protective for the costers, since they likely will be getting wet, so for them I went with Salad Bowl Finish.

Dknapp34
Thanks, all. I'm a little nervous because I've never had my stuff on display or had anyone pay money for it before.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I didn't really take any pics during the build. I forgot to mention that, to get the compound angles right, I used a setup block that I saw in an episode of Rough Cut with the original Tommy Mac. It took a while to get my head around it, but once I did, it was actually pretty easy. I used the dark brown Titebond for the sides of the serving board (which is my new favorite glue for walnut), but the brass pins were epoxied in place. Chestnut
Beautiful work, i love the bras and walnut together. I did a walnut brass and cherry stand thing a while ago and it all looks great together. 10 hours ago, wdwerker said: Nice paddle ! 50 shades crowd will bid that up. mat60
I wouldn't worry about having your work on display at all. Nice looking work.. As for redheads the shorter the better.

Coop
After going back and taking another admiring look at the pics and rereading the post, I realize the lighter colored wood is brass. Are these brass bar stock that you epoxied into grooves? That’s darn cool.
Mark J
How do you sand the piece with the brass insert? Or do you have to completely sand the wood before inlaying the brass?

Brass is soft so as long as you are careful about keeping even pressure with the ROS, it sands at the same rate as the wood. After sanding to 320 with the ROS, I went up to 1500 grit hand sanding to give the brass some shine.

It wouldn't have the polished look but more of the brushed look. That serving trey..... man that is a cool piece of wood.
