pkinneb
Oh and I almost forgot I painted the dead vent grates so they don't stand out so much. Took longer to clean the gun then to actually do it not sure why I waited a year

If you do get in a pinch just let me know. I work in Anoka so we could meet some where in between if you'd like. Found out I can use acetone which I have but thanks for the offer! I was kinda bummed I didn't get them done last weekend I certainly didn't want to wait past this weekend. Good to go now

Popular Post pkinneb
Got the first coat of epoxy on two of the counters today the third counter will be done in place. After covering things with plastic I used shims to level everything Then I mixed the epoxy using dye to color it white. I also mixed up a spray bottle with black metallic dust and acetone more on that later Then went to work. There are already tons of videos on the Stonecoat Countertops YouTube channel, here is the one I used for the most part They video shows it all so I wont go into much detail but first you pour out the epoxy then work it around with an 1/8" x 1/8" square groove trowel, once done you take a short paint brush and chop it in a random orbit fashion this mixes the epoxy one more time and helps spread it out, finally you roll it over the edge. Then its time for the effects you want in my case I wanted some black and white veins and some gray effects. the veins are done with black and white gloss spray paint on the end of a paint stir stick the other effects are done by a combination of white spray paint and the metallic black being spritzed around. Over all I am extremely happy with the product and would give myself a b- for execution. While happy with the result its not exactly what I was going for but not terrible for a first time either. One note I believe the acetone acted differently then the isopropyl alcohol would have for one it didn't dissipate as fast and I found it almost impossible to use a torch for air bubbles (it would flame up big time) luckily I had a good heat gun but even the dispersion effects were a bit different. Now that could have been me or it could have been the acetone just not sure. In an effort to make the three counters look similar I will continue with the acetone solution. The shop lights make it hard to get good pics but here are some none the less. One thing that I was really worried about was the drink rail but that came out great. I taped the edges off and did the bottom, once everything was done I pulled the tape and moved the epoxy over the edge with the heat gun, worked great. In the lead up I had visions of that filling up with epoxy I will let this set for 24 hours then apply another layer as a clear top coat.

legenddc
Let us know how it feels once it's complete. My friend did one of those counter top paint coverup things and it looked good but felt awful. If this works I may have to use it for a few projects. Better then I expected obviously not like granite etc but at 10% of the cost I can live with that. I did a test piece several months ago and its been sitting in the shop and I have sporadically tried to scratch, beat, mar, etc its actually pretty impressive how hard you have to try before you will damage it. After all that I would say again its not like granite, quartz, etc but its probably tougher than Formica. The one thing you have to be careful of is setting things on it for long periods in direct sun light. I did notice some slight marks from the test I ran where I left a serving tray with two cases (8 boxes) of 12 ga shells on it, in direct sunlight, for 6 weeks. FWIW that test piece only had the base coat not the clear coat on top which would allow you to fix damage if needed. I suspect in my use there may be some issues under the popper but i'm not to worried about it. All in I have about $420 into these so I'm not out that much if I need to switch them to granite or similar in the future. 4 hours ago, legenddc said: Let us know how it feels once it's complete. Many of the epoxy vendors sell a satin finish that is much more difficult to mar but does have the rougher texture you are talking about, these will be clear, smooth, and buffed out, they feel just like glass. In this environment they should hold up fine in everyday kitchen use not so sure.
legenddc
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately one of the spots I wanted to put it was in a pop-out window so sounds like it's not the best idea.

Chestnut
I think this looks awesome. I really want to try this so some day i may pester you about this. Some time in the near future I want to remodel our laundry room mostly to install a utility sink. Washing brushes and stuff in the kitchen sink has not been ideal. Do you think that this counter top would work Ok with a sink installed into it? IIRC you are going to have a bar sink are you not? Does this include the "extra" you bought? Or did it turn out that you bought the right amount?

Does this include the "extra" you bought? Or did it turn out that you bought the right amount? I do have a sink in mine as well but since its a bar sink (not a high use sink) I didn't go the extra step of painting a membrane on it but they do recommend that. Mine is an under mount sink so when I do the epoxy I plan to go back about 2-3" back on the underside as well. That price does not include the extra $95 for the last gallon which will do about 42 sq ft and I did not need it Two down one to go! Really happy with the result. I still give myself a B- on design execution as it could definitely look more like stone then mine do but I am totally happy and like I said keeping this to $420 helped bring the entire project within $1000 of the budget. Ronda picked her back splash which is the final decision needed to complete this project
Popular Post pkinneb
Installed the sink and faucet prior to doing the epoxy so that all I have to do is add silicone and mount everything. The sink is held with silicone as well as 6 threaded inserts screwed/epoxied into the underside of the counter. I will use those to attach the brackets too., FWIW doing this inside was a royal PITA, I would highly recommend doing it in the garage where you have access to all sides unless you have no choice. I had the walls and upper bar masked off with plastic as well but missed getting pics. basically if you don't want it to get wrecked you have to tape it off. Then you have to pull the tape after a couple hours so the epoxy does not dry and have tape lines. You can use a heat gun to soften it up if necessary but watch out for the plastic, don'task me how I know LOL
pkinneb
Today I started on six acoustic picture frames for the exercise room. These will help with the echo in the room since there is no carpet/pad in there. I had pictures from a couple of climbs I did printed on cloth and then knocked out some quick frames using the Kreg jig . Not sure where I saw these I think it was FWW but man I love these little flip stops, they came in handy today.

Mt Washington yes Borah Peak no and probably not Yes the glacier was almost gone in 2012 when I was there, sad. All that was left... You can't even tell I had been puking for almost 2 days straight when I got to the top LOL It was a tough climb for different reasons, lots of dust, and the food well lets just say it didn't go well for me LOL. Having said that its really nice having porters and not having to carry 75lb pack for days on end, took a little getting used to though. Not really a huge animal guy but the safari I took was simply amazing I plan to take my wife back for a safari. 2 hours ago, Jonathan McCully said: Would love to take my wife and do Kilimanjaro followed by a safari. pkinneb
I have a question for any experienced tile folks. My original plan was just to thin set right over the bar top brackets now I'm thinking maybe adding another 1/4" layer of either cement board or drywall might be a better route. What do you guys think? Its just the approx 6" between the bar top and the sink counter.
