Richard is having back surgery in the morning to hopefully relieve some bothersome pain he’s had for some time now. So join me if you will with thoughts and prayers and hopes for a quick recovery. Chestnut Posted April 18, 2019 Report Share Posted April 18, 2019 Thanks for the heads up. I hope that it goes smoothly for him but most of all i hope it's effective. My previous boss's wife had 5 surgeries over 3 years to solve back pain and they weren't successful. She was a Nurse for 30 years and probably did a bit too much improper lifting. Bankstick Posted April 18, 2019 Report Share Posted April 18, 2019 Years ago, my uncle was told by a orthopedic specialist that back surgery is the only surgery they can't guarantee. Get better, stay the same or get worse. Have three nurses in the immediate family- lots of lifting, turning, and getting patients in and out of beds, wheelchairs, etc. Two are retired and my daughter is going for her NP certification- one more year to go! And a lot of this and a lot of that and knowing Rick, it’s a waste of breath! Coop Posted April 20, 2019 Author Report Share Posted April 20, 2019 Rick has an old biker buddy, Hippy, caring for him, to the hospital and back and a couple of days to get thru recovery. Word has it that Hippy and Jack are going to the hospital tomorrow for a visit. I have a feeling that the nurses will see to it that he comes home early! I’ve been talking to Rick daily about his recovery and he is still in considerable pain and his doc and surgeon have no answers. His discomfort is so bad that that he can’t sit in front of a computer long enough to get on here. His primary doc and woodworking friend, made a house call today and after the visit, Rick at least has some good vibes. His doc will take over the pain management without Rick having to travel 40 miles to see the surgeon. He also prescribed home health care to help with the rehab. He is encouraged that there is relief in sighteven though it will be 4-6 weeks before he is pain free. They are appreciated now as much as they were when my wonderful wife passed. I'm only good for about 3 or 4 minutes at a time in the upright position. The surgery was on April the 18th and there were three operations done at one time. The first two were to open the pathways that the nerves pass through the spine into the legs. One on each side. Then the third was to fuse two vertebra. That was the worst one............ I'll be back. Gotta lay down. I'm back for a bit. In fusing the bones, they had to cut the muscle that attaches to the bones, along with the nerves that are in those connections. Things didn't go as "I" had hoped. In 2015 and 2017 I had the same kind of thing done with other nerves that feed into the legs, and the recovery was over in less than a week. As it stands right now, I can't walk more than on average 3 feet without using a walker. That gives my arms a workout, but doesn't do anything for the legs. And as everyone of you know, we use our legs daily when standing at our benches or table saws. That kinda makes woodwork a non project for quite awhile. I'll be back. Prone is where I need to be unless you want to see tears on this post.......... Here I am again. The point of this, beside for thanking all you guys, is to let you know, that though I may not be making anything for awhile, I'm thinking about making. And I'll pop in now and then to let you know any progress. When I can resume doing what I like to be doing, and I return to the rude, crude and socially unacceptable human that you all know and love, I'll let you know. In the mean time, I'm can assume that my regular Dr., who by the way is a damn good woodworker in his own right, will tell me that in a month or two, I should be fit as a fiddle... not a violin. Oh and for a few of you that know me somewhat. My top notch good and excellent friend , a native of Tennessee, is assisting me quite well in this recovery effort. Say Hi to my dear and close friend a Mr. Jack Daniels, from Lynchburg, Tn.. Again, thank each and every one of you for your thoughts and prayers, and remember sawdust is good dust.
