wtnhighlander
@gee-dub, you should grab a sharpie and make a few 'cave paintings' before you cover the wall, just blow the mind if some future archaeologist.
Coop
Damn, that thing got bigger! You subbed out the drywall, right?
Popular Post gee-dub
Yes, I did sub out the drywall. That way I could spend time building the dust collector shed while the drywall was being done. There are some things I enjoy doing and there are some things I do not. I beat him… LOL.
gee-dub
Dug out one of my DC parts stashes. This stuff was wrapped in a tarp next to an outbuilding for the last couple of years. I'll raid the other stash locations, take inventory and clean things up a bit.
Popular Post gee-dub
The dust collection fairy dropped off a few parts I still needed to make my current inventory flesh out to the new design.
wtnhighlander
@gee-dub, are those fittings of the thinner-walled PVC material (schedule 20?) typically used for DC work? All I ever find at the Big Box places is schedule 40.

All I ever find at the Big Box places is schedule 40. Correct. ASTM-2729 and the like. They are seldom in stores but places like Lowe's carry Charlotte Pipe and NDS products. You need to order them but, a couple of fittings quickly reaches the price that qualifies for free shipping. These were about $24 versus the $40 for schd-40 or $100+clamps for steel. I don't buy these items often but, find I source them differently nearly every time. At one point Ace Hardware Online had a great price on 6" ASTM-2729 pipe so when I bought I bought extra. This time around Lowe's had the best 'price to my door' so I ordered a few wyes, elbows and caps from them. It really pays to shop around on these things. The price swing can be significant and apparently varies with vendor and the point in time that you order.

Just this morning I was pricing something out and was looking at two pretty big names retail wise and saw a $100 price difference.

Chestnut
I get excited every time a see an update on this thread. That 3/4 wall is a great idea. Sometimes it seems like the wide open square is not really the best for a hobby shop as it leaves so little wall space.

I was having trouble coming up with a layout I liked. Of course I am looking at EVERYONE's shop, here and elsewhere, for ideas during the design phase. Then I saw a guy with a wall behind his milling area for jigs. The light came on and I put up a wall behind the bench to hand my tool cabinet on. That changed my whole approach to the layout. Adding the second wall gave me the workflow I was after and made sectioning off my stock and finishing areas easier as a bonus. The important lesson for me is that we each have different needs. I need to stay open to things or I might miss something that could really help me out.

Popular Post curlyoak
I was looking around my shop and thinking are there any ideas for gee-dub. I have had a lot of mileage from this rack. I got this idea from fine woodworking 20 years ago. I sandwiched a piece of oak the thickness of the galvanized pipe. Outside the oak is off the shelf 2 x 4 studs. The pipe is angled a few degrees. The pipes are 28" total length leaving 24" of storage. Each bay is 15" high. I have filled it to the max with hardwood without a problem. The top bolts go through the wall. The rest of the bolts are firm in the wall. Gee-dub, I hope this might be of some use for you. However I find you to be very creative on ideas and chances are you have a better mousetrap. I admire your work and am jealous of your new shop. Another thought is to place your planer and jointer near a door or window so the outfeed goes out the building saving valuable floor space. The shelves illustrated are conveniently located for easy unloading the truck.
Coop
I bet it was asked but looking back, I don’t see it. Did you seal the floor with anything?
gee-dub
No top sealer or epoxy on this one.

gee-dub
15 years in my previous concrete shop without issue. I do wear good footwear so I pretty much carry my "good floor" with me. I also use rubber mats in areas where I stand for periods. The original plan was to put an epoxy finish on the whole thing. That got taken off the list for a few reasons. Even with that I would still need good shoes/boots and mats. I am not discounting the value of a wood floor on sleepers or other flexible solution. Different things are important to different people. So far this hasn't been a problem for me. Kudos to my mom who harangued me into a life long habit of good posture If it becomes an issue as I push 80 I can always lay in a wood floor . . . famous last words ;-)
