Popular Post Chestnut Posted October 12, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 12, 2022 Stole 2 hours if shop time and made a sunglasses holder. 1 hour of the 2 was putting things away and then picking out the perfect piece of wood. It got hung above the key holder. I don't have any more of that crazy box elder or I'd have made it from that. Choices eliminated were birds eye maple, curly maple, ambrosia maple, or bubinga. The red from the boxelder key holder isn't fading as fast as i thought it might. 6 Quote
Chestnut Posted October 31, 2022 Author Report Posted October 31, 2022 We have some hall closets, they are probably linen closest but are more like a pantry cabinet in a kitchen. They are not the must usable because they are oddly sized. Once is 28" 1ide and 20" deep. The other is 23" wide and 20 Inches deep. To make the space more usable I've been making trays that mount on BB slides. so you can pull the shelf out to get at the back. I recently figured out that I cut the drawers 1" too wide so there is no space for the BB drawer slide. So here is to hoping i can knock the 3 glued drawers apart cut an inch off and glue them back together. 2 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted October 31, 2022 Report Posted October 31, 2022 @Chestnut, if you haven't seen @BillyJack's post about adjustable-height drawer slide installation, take a look before you get too far. It might be a good enhancement for that application. 1 Quote

Popular Post Chestnut Posted November 16, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 16, 2022 Slowly moving forward on the hall closet drawers. I really only get 30 min of work a day now because playing with a 4 month old baby is far more fun than woodworking. It's amazing how fast they develop. It seems like 4 weeks ago she wasn't able to grab an object much less move it from hand to hand or bring it to her mouth. The smiles and giggles have almost made me forget all the crying from the first 2 months, almost. After realizing I made the drawers too wide i figured out i can knock one side off with a mallet with minimal damage cut the drawer narrower and then glue the side back on. The drawers aren't going to be as strong but as long as I don't drop 45lb plate weights on the drawer from a height of 18" it should be fine. It's been 15 years since taking mechanics of materials and university physics 3 so maybe don't quote me on that. The walls are not parallel to each other, so I had to use some plywood to shim the wood spaces. The wood spaces attach to the wall to allow the drawer glides to fit out the cabinet opening. Over all 3 inches of width is lost but it makes the 31" depth MUCH more usable. The items pictured occupied 2 shelves previously. 5 Quote

legenddc Posted November 20, 2022 Report Posted November 20, 2022 When pre-finishing door panels do you do all of the coats or just one coat? Quote

Especially if the panels are figured. One of the reasons is I like to see the figure. And I want less rather than more in the groove. 1 Quote

Popular Post JohnG Posted November 25, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted November 25, 2022 Very quick project for my wife. She has a closet full of file cabinets to store her quilting fabrics and supplies. I made a wood top to give room for cutting and a large pressing mat. The closet is 10’ wide, but instead of adding another 2’ piece of plywood we left it for some boxes of fabric scraps and who knows what. They fit nicely in the space. Very simple, 18”x8’ plywood, iron on edge banding. Then cut the pressing mat to width on my bandsaw. There’s another door to the closet to the right that makes access pretty open and easy. 7 Quote

Popular Post JohnG Posted November 26, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted November 26, 2022 Another quick project. It’s just nice having some time in the shop again. Knocking out the quick projects I’ve had on my list for a while. Quick wins. For the kids’ backpacks and jackets. Cherry with Osmo PolyX. Rounded the corners on the belt sander, then ran a roundover buried about 1/32 for a little edge detail. 6 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted November 28, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted November 28, 2022 I bet all those filing cabinets were fun in the move. Is it a requirement to be a woodworker your wife has to quilt? My grandmother cross-stitched while my grandfather was in his shop. My wife doesn't do anything with needles and thread. Maybe if she did my woodworking skills would improve... Yesterday morning I snuck in some shop time but nothing seemed to be going my way so I stopped and went to play with the kids. My son decided he wanted to build a Home Depot kids kit so we went back down and knocked that out. After some more shop time in the afternoon my daughter decided she wanted to make a kit too. Nice to be able to do that with the kids. 4 1 Quote

Our Home Depot hasn't started them up again but they do have the kits out for free around the first Saturday. If I'm there for something else I'll walk by the front desk and snag a couple. 1 Quote
Chestnut Posted December 4, 2022 Author Report Posted December 4, 2022 This junk didn't even get made into anything before it decided to break under its own weight. Working with junk is frustrating but it's been hanging around in my shed for too long. 2 Quote
BillyJack Posted December 4, 2022 Report Posted December 4, 2022 It didn't break on its own,. it may have been fractured and you didn't notice it. Maybe you have a ghost in your shop? Quote
Chestnut Posted December 4, 2022 Author Report Posted December 4, 2022 Vacuum press is working great. It wasn't building vacuum and i was bbaffled. Turns out three filter on the line wasn't tight. I'm making floating shelves probably doing it weird and wrong but it'll work. I'm fastening spacers. The melamine is the platin the perfect material for the job. 2 Quote
Popular Post Chestnut Posted December 5, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted December 5, 2022 I did finish the hall closet drawers I forgot to post the pictures. The size of the drawers is great it allows us to store a lot more in the closet and keep the rear accessible. The drawers do extend a long way into the hall and make the hallway impassable on full extension. Part of what took me so long was I wanted all of the edged of the plywood to be banded. Not with cheap iron on banding either good home sawn 1/8" thick banding material. I think the results look really nice. The drawers are finished with shellac to minimize the maple ply from looking dirty. Another part that made the install tricky was the walls were not parallel at all and they twisted relative to each other. As a result I needed to do some tricks with mounting the wood the runners attach to to make sure everything functioned well. It resulted in quite a bit of trial and error pulling the drawer out and adjusting shims. Empty the drawers don't function the smoothest but with some weight they glide in and out quite effortlessly. The slides are slightly out of alignment. Hindsight there could be some things done differently to make the install easier but that's what makes hindsight so frustrating. 5 Quote
