wtnhighlander
Cool photo! The deep shadow makes it one of those optical illusions where it is difficult to tell if the background is lower or higher than the foreground. I feel your pain about routing a wide expanse of background. I've developed the habit of starting in the center and working outward, so the router base always has at least the outer half supported. If you get to an edge of the workpiece, lay another piece of the same thickness next to it for added support.
Popular Post davewyo
I've been working the background down and defining the edges of the image. I have a little more to do on the first one. After I get the two panels cleaned up I'll start contouring the leaves and flower petals, etc. http://

Popular Post davewyo
I did quite a bit more of the same today. There's still a little tweaking to do on the stems and making things crisp and such, but it's coming along. Moving on to the straight lines that make up the border next. http://

I'm just a rank amateur muddling along, making all the mistakes you can think of. There are all kinds of grain tear outs and mis-cuts and what nots in these two panels. It's funny how photography sometimes shows glaring mistakes you didn't notice, and other times it hides them. When I started into the first panel a couple of days ago the first thing I did was bust off a piece of stem. The second thing I did was go back to the house and get some glue. Yesterday I preemptively took the glue out there with me and I got lucky and didn't end up using it. It seems like this project would require incredible patience but I'm not finding the long drawn-out process all that maddening. It probably helps that there are numerous sub-steps with a distinctly pleasing outcome at the end. I can think of each step as a project of its own. Plus every time I put a blade to a part that has so much work in it there is a pucker factor that keeps each move very interesting. If I just drop it on the work bench I might cry. It's amazing how a couple of days of carving can turn a 12" piece of wood into a precious item that I would not like to try and duplicate. A couple of things of note (to me). I am using mostly curved gouges on these flat surfaces where I was using way more straight chisels on the rounded pieces of the project. It seems counter intuitive but when working on something flat you want a curved gouge or the corners will dig in. A gouge with a gentle sweep (say a No. 2 or 3) allows the corners to not be engaged with the surface, sorta like the camber on a plane iron. I'm liking the grain on the side panels. I sort of wanted a bull's eye pattern in the middle but the stock on hand had all long cathedral patterns. In that situation I usually orient my cathedrals upwards so that the grain looks like an arch rather than a "U". It just looks like it flows better to me. In this instance I cut the cathedral to look like a "U" thinking that it might give it a "vase like" effect and an upward flow of grain that would compliment the carving. We'll see how it turns out with a finish on it, but so far I'm liking it.

davewyo
Thanks Gang! I'm moving along on the second panel. http:// 2 hours ago, Chet K said: I wouldn't mind seeing the tools you are using for the carving process. I started the project with a quite limited set of carving tools (as pictured in one of the earliest posts), but over time I've accumulated, um, a couple. These are what I'm using most for this panel carving. http:// But I have to admit to being a complete tool junkie...so I have these now too. http://

These are looking awesome Dave! Thanks, Kev! I got the carving mostly done today. http:// Now I'm crafting a hinge pin into a textured punch to put some stippling on the stamens of the flowers. Then on to sanding. Quite a lot of nit-picky detail sanding, in fact. It'll be a chore, but I don't want to save that until the end or I'll be inundated with days of tedium just before the finish goes on.

wtnhighlander
Dave the panels look great! Are you planning to keep the background flat, or add some texture?

I'm hoping it's okay flat and smooth.
