Cabriole Thing

Thanks guys!

I found this book on ornamentation which was published in 1868. It has been helpful in developing ideas for patterns. You can quickly scroll through (ie. look at the pictures) and follow the evolution of decorative style through the ages. I found the "General Principles" (starting on page 5) to be immensely interesting. I love "rules of thumb" (from the internet: a broadly accurate guide or principle, based on experience or practice rather than theory).

Brought the other three sides up to date.

Now I'm working out how I'll do some contouring on the "fleur de lis" thing:

And this 1 1/4" x 5/8" rectangle.

Here are some options I've been considering.

I think I'm opting for something geometrical like option two, with stippling in the background field as is depicted in option five...or it could be just blank. Too many possibilities! I find it difficult to decide.

I like the 2nd for the left as well but taking Highlanders advice above change the arches from roman arch to Gothic arch. I think it would fit the theme a bit better.

I like it! Perhaps something like #8 or #11

OK, you've backed yourself into a wall. How in the world are you going to TOP this? Heck of a job man!

Thanks Coop! I'm just gonna keep plugging along, figuring it out as I go...

#11 in my opinion #8 looks too busy. Though i appreciate #9 as well.

Agreed. I like the larger shapes in #11

#8 has all those little tiny triangles which are difficult to carve.

Another option is to plant a design at the corner, like this:

That's a really cool effect. I hadn't thought of wrapping a design around the two sides of the leg, though I have considered something like that with fluted "pillars" at the front corners of the upper case.

To make the corners rounded like that I would have had to plan it out from the beginning.

Had a thought throwing it out there. Not the greatest at drawing either.

Hey! This is fun! Crowd sourcing at it's best.

That's not a bad sketch at all. Thanks for throwing it out there. It helps me solidify my own thoughts. I don't know how to explain it, but it's too "churchy". I think Steve nailed it when he emphasized the overall look. As I go up to the middle of the case I'm thinking I'm going to make the embellishments less floral and more geometrical (like columns and such). These little windows at the tops of the legs are a good place to make the transition.
