It was pretty cool, and I ended up in the area where they were unloading the balloons and preparing for liftoff. I was surprised how close they set up, and there was plenty of bumping on the ground. A couple lightly brushed up against eachother in the air, but mostly stayed apart. Quote

Gary Beasley Posted October 24, 2019 Report Posted October 24, 2019 Just got a new photography book by some contemporary masters of the medium. If you've ever heard of carbon printing and was interested in the process this is the book to buy. 1 Quote

curlyoak Posted October 24, 2019 Report Posted October 24, 2019 This is Brassavolsa nodosa. A natural species found in the Caribbean, All of central America, and Northern South America. The nick name is lady of the night. It is call that because it has a sweet and spicy smell only at night. 1 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted October 24, 2019 Report Posted October 24, 2019 @Gary Beasley, can you explain a bit about carbon transfer printing? Never heard of it, sounds like something Al Gore might have tried to push through congress.... 1 Quote
Gary Beasley Posted October 25, 2019 Report Posted October 25, 2019 It uses a sensitised gelatin and pigment mix that when exposed through a negative the gelation hardens where the light hits it and the remaining gelatin is washed off. After that the gelatin is transferred to the final substrate for the finished image. The gelatin can be colored with different pigments and you can actually use color separations to make color prints. This was a method to make high quality pictures for about a hundred years. 1 Quote

Gary Beasley Posted December 8, 2019 Report Posted December 8, 2019 For the photography nerds out there, a quite interesting video with one of the last masters of dye transfer printing. http://ctein.com/Josh/LLVJ_Ctein_Dye_Transfer (2005) _1040p.m4v Quote
difalkner Posted December 8, 2019 Report Posted December 8, 2019 That was a great video on dye transfer. A year ago I gave my early 70's Canon FTb to my daughter and she's really getting into film, beginning to develop her own color as we speak. But I told her the ultimate is dye transfer so this video will help to reinforce what I told her. Thanks for sharing! David Quote
Popular Post JohnG Posted January 2, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted January 2, 2020 I may have gone a bit overboard, but I treated myself to some new goodies for the holidays. I had thought I'd use some of my year-end bonus and distributions to buy some new woodworking equipment, but with a planned move in 5-6months without known shop size, I decided to wait on that. Canon 5D has always been my dream camera, so I got myself a mk iv with 24-105 f/4L. I wanted the 24-105 for the times I don't want to do lens swaps, but I usually shoot primes. While I was at it I got the Tamron 150-600 G2. I've enjoyed my 70-300 for some wildlife and aircraft photos, but need more reach to really get the shots I want. Next on my list is a 35mm prime, but that will probably wait a while. Might have to make another cabinet! Actually I’ll probably keep the big lens somewhere else. 4 Quote

It was a pretty neat experience at the zoo. When we first arrived it was raining pretty hard, so it was almost empty. We only saw 2-3 other groups the whole time we were there and all the animals were much more aware of our presence (or they just made us more aware of that!) The mother lion took notice from a good distance and stared at me for a good while. The juvenile lion, not so much. 3 Quote
Popular Post Chestnut Posted January 5, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted January 5, 2020 I made a holder for my camera in my shop. I was moving a lot of large items around and got worried that I'd bump it. Should have done this a while ago. 3 Quote
Mark J Posted January 5, 2020 Report Posted January 5, 2020 Aren't you worried about dust getting on and in the camera? Quote
Chestnut Posted January 6, 2020 Report Posted January 6, 2020 8 hours ago, Mark J said: Aren't you worried about dust getting on and in the camera? Nope not in the slightest. They are weather sealed and can be cleaned for a fee. The biggest reason, if i was worried about the camera I'd never use it. My shop is one of the cleanest danger free places that camera has traveled. Quote
legenddc Posted January 6, 2020 Report Posted January 6, 2020 @John G.What zoo were you at and do you know where you'll be moving to? Pics look great. Congrats on the new gear! Quote
JohnG Posted January 6, 2020 Author Report Posted January 6, 2020 Hey @legenddc, These were taken at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk VA. It’s about 15 minutes from our house. It’s not a huge zoo but it’s pretty nice. We will be moving to Winston-Salem NC, or one of the towns just outside of W-S. Quote
