Popular Post shaneymack
I positioned the chair on the rockers and aligned them using the process Marc demontrates in the video. The back 8" of my rockers did not end up taking the sharp curve the same so I thought the way Marc showed couldn't work but now I realised i was over thinking it. It worked out great. I emailed back and forth with Kev (tiods) Friday evening about this and he explained he got caught up at this step a bit as well. Good to talk to someone that did this build as well. Thanks again Kev! So with the rockers positioned where they need to be it was time to fit the legs to sit flush to the transition blocks. As you can see here they are way off. I scribed the four legs Cut them with the handsaw I just kissed the line. The rest will be sanded down in place Next i put the chair back on the rockers and put a piece of 100 grit sandpaper under the leg. With a little downward pressure on the leg i pulled the paper out. I did this over and over again untill i had a perfect fit. This isnt quick but it is a sure way to get a perfect fit. Like this After I got all the legs sitting perfectly on the transition blocks i passed one side on the rocker over the jointer. Then i flipped it over and drumsanded the other side. One pass was all it took with 120 grit. I was anxious to inspect the joint where i re glued the transition block after I repaired it. I thought there might be a slight hairline gap. There was no such gap. Very happy about that. Here is a closeup of the joint Next I used dowel center markers to mark where i need to drill into the rocker. I marked the angle i needed to drill at and went to town Both front holes drilled Drilled the rear holes Next i marked the transitions and cut them out roughly on the bandsaw Next it was back to shaping! Lots of fun. I clamped it to my bench the same way i did the spindles. Marked out the roundover. And rounded underside and the topside. I shaped the back end of the rockers. I love this, I think it looks really cool. It goes from roundover and transitions into a large chamfer and reveals more of the wenge layer. Then i removed as much waste as i could at the front end before the FINAL glue up! Mixed up some epoxy and glued on the rockers! !!!! I also glued in the plugs. Its official, i have a rocking chair!!! I'm almost done! Transitions from leg to rockers, sanding and finish!! Kinda sad it's almost over, guess I will have to do another one..... I worked 5 hours today and 1.5 on friday night. Total 78.5 hours. Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk

Yea, you're on the downhill slide now.. You'll spend a bunch of time after you finish your sculpting on the rockers just going over the chair with a fine tooth comb making sure it's ready for finish. Still a bit of time to spend sculpting the rockers tho.. Time for the die grinder and the rasps!
Brendon_t
I also dig the splay of the back legs and wenge reveal. It's almost scraper till your hands bleed time.
shaneymack
I also dig the splay of the back legs and wenge reveal. It's almost scraper till your hands bleed time. 90% of the chair is scraped and sanded. I did it before i glued up the spindles and headrest. Im normally pretty happy to be done a project and on to the next. There is just something really special about this thing. I am for sure going to do more of this style of furniture. Some lowbacks, barstools and some more rockers are in my future I'm sure. Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk

shaneymack
Looks great, fast progress! I can't believe you're still under 80 hours! Thanks JT! It doesn't feel like it has been fast. The first three weeks before the holidays went really fast but then i lost momentum with the holidays and getting snipped. I had estimated around 100 hours, and it looks like I will be close! Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk
