My sawyer cuts all his oaks where he gets very little plain sawn. He says the technique to do takes more work but I don't know if it creates more waste. He mentioned having it quartersawn. That should certainly be better.
wtnhighlander
I know most of us consider painting walnut to be sacrilege, but in this case, I think a exception is warrented. Zoom in on the title card. Junior and I visited the Discovery Park of America yesterday. http://www.discoveryparkofamerica.com One permanent exhibit concerns the history of timber cutting in this region of the country. Anyone heard of "shittim" or "gopher" wood, outside of Biblical context? And here is one to poke@Eric. about the term "black" walnut.

Mark J
That's a cool display. I wish the use of scientific names for trees was more common. I find the common names confusing. Was that an original Leondardo DaVinci or a reproduction?
wdwerker
Butternut is sometimes referred to as White Walnut.

Was that an original Leondardo DaVinci or a reproduction? Pretty certain they wouldn't put the original within reach of the average 12 year old. These were copies, but pretty decent ones. Another exhibit at Discovery Park is a relocated water-wheel driven grist mill. Looks like straight-up M&T on these 12/4 poplar stairs. Not a peg, screw, or nail in sight. I never determined what keeps the runners from spreading apart.
wdwerker
Blind wedged tenon ? They cut the bottom of the mortice wider, kerf the tenon, insert wedge, drive it in with a big mallet (like the one Gallager uses) !
Popular Post prov163
RANT ALERT: If you are going to use your damn cell phone, please park your car. If you can't see my Harley Davidson Road King with three lights shining as I approach the intersection, please park your car. If you can look me straight in the eyes then pull out and cause me to swerve into the median, forcing me to pass you so as to avoid hitting another car, then honk the horn and flip me off as if I am the crazy one, then please for the love of God and the rest of us who enjoy riding our motorcycles on beautiful days like today, get off the damn road. Rant over!

Popular Post Mark J
@wdwerker, @prov163 (and others) I thought you might like this. It is a photograph of the Apollo 17 landing site taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2011. That is the decent stage of the Lunar Module in middle. Science experiment station to the left and the long squiggly things are the foot prints, or more accurately the foot paths (the astronauts tended to re-use the same paths). To the right are wheel tracks from the rover, and the rover itself is parked in the lower right of the photo. https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/news/apollo-sites.html I knew I had the image on my PC, but kept forgetting to look for it. The image is in the public domain so I had had it printed and framed in my old office. I moved out a few years back and the picture was gathering dust in a closet. I think this needs dusting off and hanging in the workshop... for those times when I think something can't be done.
Popular Post prov163
Mark, that's super cool. Thanks for sharing it. I may get a print of it too. I peruse NASA recently and love the pictures from the Hubble. I'm really glad Trump signed their budget but I'm saddened that young people today aren't fascinated by the space program like we were in the 60's. Thanks again!

The space program needs a new mission. JFK challenged the country to put humans on the moon in less than a decade, at a time when a good many rural parts of the country still used outdoor toilets and kerosene lanterns. What fantastic challenge has been brought forth since?

Popular Post Tom King
All my best friends work for NASA. The guy who did the welding on that rover-actually, not only did the welding but invented the method-died a few years ago, and left me all his tools. He's the person who taught me how to weld. NASA still gets the cream of the young minds, but they come from all over the world. They get some amazing kids to work Summers. Very few would make the grade anyway, but there doesn't really seem to be any shortage other than maybe the keeping of some out of the country. I've been very fortunate to get to stroll through the Science Labs to see what they're working on for the JWST, and the step up from the Hubble will be unbelievable.
