legenddc
Officially off until Jan 4th. I have a million errands to run over the next few days but I'm hoping I can get some workshop time in. Might have to try my hand at some reindeer. Good luck Saturday Drew!

The 10:00 weather lady last night predicted a low of 32* so to be on the safe side, I put on my head lamp and picked about 25 lbs of tomatoes. Glad I did as there was ice on the bird baths this morning. Time for some tomato relish! Catfish anyone?
drzaius
Slap on some walnut stain & a coat of high gloss poly on that table & you'll be able to get top dollar for it on Etsy

Darn good idea. Thanks We had a small garden with about 15 tomato plants when I was a kid. Every year we'd go out the morning of the first freeze and pick all that was left to make relish. Loved that stuff! I took flying lessons in the early 90s outside Roanoke, TX. We'd fly up across the TX/OK state line north of Gainesville to a little catfish restaurant with a grass landing strip. Catfish and tomato relish! Yumm.
gee-dub
Playing with a Matchfit sled idea in order to optimize my currently cramped and temporary digs.
wtnhighlander
That's a lot of clamping track for one sled, @gee-dub! Ought to hold anything you can put on it.
Popular Post legenddc
Yesterday was challenging. Seemed like nothing wanted to go my way. After spending entirely too long and way too many trips to Home Depot our toilet flush valve has been replaced. I thought I got it working last night around 9 then went downstairs only to hear it run when I eventually got into bed. At least it's fixed now. Cranking away on a doll bunk bed for my daughter for Christmas. I need to get it wrapped up tonight or early tomorrow so my wife can paint it. Hope everyone's having a good weekend!
wtnhighlander
I have finally reached the point of realization that each and every DIY plumbing repair I do requires at least two, typically 3, trips to the nearest home center. I can call a plumber and have it done right for less than the cost of gas. Even on nights and weekends...
Popular Post JohnG
When I worked at a (small) hardware store we always cautioned customers not to start a plumbing job on a Sunday. All of the specialty plumbing stores were closed on Sundays and chances were that something would come up and they'd need a specialty part that we didn't carry. Many times we had "told you so" conversations. I got my olympic bar and plate set that I ordered a little while back. It was unfortunate timing that the covid hom gym rush happened at the same time that we moved into our house and I was able to have a dedicated space for weight equipment. It worked out well though because I had time to rearrange some things and build the rack before these came. Unfortunately now I don't have any excuse for staying out of shape
Popular Post legenddc
JohnG you have kids so there’s always an excuse. This should have been a simple 20 minute job but such is life. One of 3 toilets and no water shut off made it safe to try. Made even harder yesterday with my 3 year old sitting on my lap while I fixed it but that part was fun. Very fortunate to live 1.5 miles away from a Home Depot.
Tom King
Nothing worse to work on than old plumbing, even if it's only a decade old. The older it is, the farther back through the system you have to keep going, even for a "simple" repair. JohnG, what type of bar, and plates did you get?
wtnhighlander
Yeah, @JohnG, let's pics! Did you build any support structures to work with the bar, or is everything pre-fabricated? Here is a tip, if you can find an inexpensive source. A 12x12x1 plate of mild steel, with a 2" hole in the center, weighs almost exactly 50lb. I still have 4 plates I made to suppliment my setup before I quit the heavy stuff.
JohnG
It’s the Lifeline brand. I still need to move a few things to get a bit more clearance, but that will be quick and easy. I haven’t unpacked the plates yet, but got 2x45, 2x35, 2x25, 2x10, 4x5, and 2x2.5

wtnhighlander
Nice rack, John! (I don't say that to many guys ). Floor is concrete, I hope. If not, don't repeat a mistake I once made, and pull all the plates from one end of the bar when switching exercizes. With 250lb on just one end of the bar, mine tipped off the squat rack and speared a hole through the floor...
JohnG
Thanks! Yes, concrete floor with some rubber horse stall mats for impact and sound reduction. Still plenty firm for lifting on.

Forgetting that Kohler has a special gasket, I opted for a cheap one. Should have taken it apart before going to HD.

Coop
That is neat! Care to elaborate on the build. The fill and the banding for two? What woods? The sunset was God given! Hope you are handling the season as well as can be. Thoughts and prayers to be with you bud!
Chestnut
Beautiful Mick! That tray is really cool, but that sunset makes me jealous we never get good ones at our house. Too many trees and a hill are in the way.

What woods? The sunset was God given! Hope you are handling the season as well as can be. Thoughts and prayers to be with you bud! Thanks, Ken. One of my students made a few of these in a Projects class I taught this past semester. He gave me the bending form once he'd finished with it. I used up some offcuts and various scraps. The center of the panel is mesquite, of course, with white oak on either side. The banding is sapele, bent laminations, and the saddles are ebony I stippled with a Dremmel tool. I used Osmo polyx for the finish and signed it with my new little laser on the bottom. My student used a #4 Domino to join the banding to the tray where it meets on either side. It was a tricky setup. I opted to use the PantRouter with a ⅛" straight bit to join the ends together plus (4) ⅛" x ½" loose tenons on each side. It worked beautifully. And the new oscillating edge sander was great for flushing up the edges to the banding. The fill - is turquoise. I have a small divided container that I use to separate the different grain sizes. I start with prefilling any large voids with epoxy to about ⅛" below the surface. Once it's set, I add large pieces where they'll fit and work my way to the finest powder. I drizzle thin CA glue into the area and hit it with accelerant, then sand it flush. I then use compressed air to blow out the dust and reapply the powder into any remaining voids, CA and sand again.
