Popular Post Coop
I noticed today that stink bugs have discovered my tomato plants. Although the plants have about had it due to the heat, there are still plenty of nice tomatoes to be picked and these bugs play havoc on them. I’m not a complete organic gardening freak but I eliminate chemicals when I can. I take my shop vac and sprinkle Seven Dust in the bottom. I had to improvise on connecting the vac hose to the Longer Festool hose by connecting them together with a rubber beer cozie. Then it’s just a matter of turning on the vac and strolling down the rows, sucking up bugs. I believe the trip thru the hose probably would kill them but the Seven finishes them off.

If you listen to some of the more curmudgeonly citizenry in our town we are completely run over with deer. There are a lot of them, but I like having them here. Last year a doe gave birth to two fawns just outside our back gate. Several times a summer we'll see deer in our small back yard, munching on the strawberry plants or other greenery, or laying down on the compost heap for a rest. Anyway, they don't seem to be that interested in our hostas strangely enough.

Coop
Drew, when you mill with a chainsaw, do you get good uniform in thickness?

The only reason I could see that would result in an uneven thickness is if the chain was sharpened with a bad set to one side or drastic user error. As long as the chain is well sharpened it's pretty east to get a uniform thickness.
Chestnut
Any one know how long a chain saw file will last? I sharpen every tank and have probably run 6 gallons of gas through my saw. Not sure how many tanks that is.

Popular Post gee-dub
Continued my battle to restore a decent look to my failed waterborne/HVLP adventure. Nothing wrong with waterborne finishes or HVLP. I'm just no good at it yet . I stripped everything and went with my usual high VOC oil:varnish blend wiped on.

I was looking for a dispenser like that the other day to dispense bar and chain oil. I ended up poking a hole in the top of a 20oz pop bottle. It doesn't work nearly as well...

I'd guess about 20 sharpenings, but that counting each one as three strokes per sharpening. I hit the chain at each fill up. I've never counted, but as long as it's throwing metal shavings without having to push so hard, I keep using it. When it stops cutting, I pull out another one. 1

Good information thanks. I'm using the stihl 2 in 1 file holder. It's slick but one file wasn't cutting so the chain was cutting very rough. I visited 4 stihl dealers yesterday trying to find 13/64" files. 3 dealers were out. One deal had a 3 pack for $26, I walked strait out the door. Every other location had them for $2 per file. Maybe I'm missing something and they are made from diamond crusted moon rocks or something.

The glue sometimes hardens in the little gasket but you can just gently pull it out and if keeps going.
jussi
Started installation of Byrd head on my planer. Hardest part was getting the pulley and bearings on and off. Instructions said the pulley should slide right off but that wasn’t the case for me. Had to borrow a puller from auto store. Also since I don’t have a press getting the new bearings on resulted in me putting the cutter head in a freezer. Unfortunately I seemed to have lost a bolt so I couldn’t quite finish the install. Will get a replacement bolt later this week.

I buy Pferd files by the box. I don't like the 2 in 1 things. I use a separate file for the rakers. I use one hand on the file. The little smooth end is put in the hook of the cutter, and then take a full stroke. I like Oregon wooden file handles. Each stroke takes about one second. I have a bunch of different raker gauges, but I don't use one on every raker. I see how many strokes it takes on the first couple, and then count strokes on the rest. I use the smooth edge raker files. The line on the Stihl tooth gives a reference for the proper crosscut angle. For anything else, I put proper angled lines on a 4" wide strip of scrap plywood with a Sharpie, and lay that behind the bar where it's in the field of view. That's all the guide you probably need, and all I ever use. I do pretty much the same for sharpening handsaws, although for handsaws you push down, whereas with a chain it's straight into the gullet of the hook-both really pushing into the gullet. Chain sharpening setup is in a little Sterilite box, seen with the white top in this picture.
wtnhighlander
@Chestnutthe arborist I once worked for taught us to use the file without a guide or holder, with a hand at each end. This allows the fingers to twirl the file as it pushes forward, helping to sharpen 'under the hook', and distributing wear across the file. legenddc
Had a tree fall across the street from us Sunday night during a storm. We were safely waiting it out in the basement when we saw the high wind alert. Since the tree blocked access to about 100 houses the firefighters came out and had to clear a lane. They ended up switching saws as soon as the other had its blade replaced. Not sure how many blades they carry with them but I hope they sharpen them and they don’t get tossed and buy new ones after 3-5 minutes of use. 1
JohnG
Had a fox kill 12 of our 15 chickens. Found a loose section and dug under it. While my wife was looking for remains, I saw the fox heading back up to the pen, probably hoping for the last three. Considered throwing my shovel at it, but I knew it was too far away. It spotted me and ran off.
