JohnG
Protects them from deer and other wildlife as well. Some have no vent holes at the bottom to make it safer to spray herbicide around the base if that’s what you’re into.
Chestnut
2 hours ago, Mark J said: I've never seen tree tubes before. Are they used to get a straight tree? Other purposes? What John said. They also do a good job promoting the tree to grow up for the early years instead of branching out. The walnut trees i plated in 2008 grew very little vertically for the first 2 years. Once I put them in tubes they added 24" vertically. There is a downside. The truck is still really small at that point so you still need to keep them in the tube for a long time or they tip over due to being top heavy. The upside to leaving them in the tube is the truck is protected from buck damage.
legenddc
I'll have to look into that and watch Cremona's video. We don't have any land to plant a tree but I've been contemplating transplanting some of the little oak trees on our community property since they just keep cutting them down and not replanting. I think the tubes would alert them to my activities though. It's crazy to see all the leaves in the tube too.

I put them over the tree when they were planted. The trees were this big when planted, minus the leaves. Not my actual trees I haven't planted white oak. Thanks!! Popular Post BonPacific
I took the day off work and used it for a little day trip out to Port Townsend. Wandered around downtown, Point Wilson lighthouse, and Edensaw Woods of course (didn't buy anything unfortunately). It was a perfect pacific northwest day, bright and overcast. Really makes me want to take another class at the woodworking school there.
Popular Post BonPacific
Bit late in the season, but hopefully our cold and wet weather will be on my side. Got 4 grape saplings in the ground and (hopefully) protected from the wildlife.

It almost looks like alien wood grew that way Maybe he can offer a quick write up of the process. I wish I could describe the precess in writing but it is not straightforward. Pattern is made with thin veneer. Each little piece straddles the border between heart wood and sap wood. You start in he middle creating the curved boundary between heart and sap and work around the spiral using a piece fo clear accetate witht eh pattern draw on it for alignment. Eventually you get to a point where you new pices start to overlap you existing pieces - that's a problem, so you start making a separate piece and splice the pieces together like maquetry. I hope that made sense - not easy to explain. Check out this video by instructor Scott Grove. 2
Popular Post gee-dub
Started cleaning the rust off of some tools inherited from dad. He lived close to the ocean so weekly maintenance was the norm for him. He tapered off toward the end and the surface rust shows that. I will get them cleaned up. Daily use of some of his tools will help me miss him less .

Popular Post BonPacific
No kids of my own, but I had my father and brother over for a nice grilled steak and afterwards we spent most of the afternoon just chatting on the deck enjoying the day. Then I got the legs and aprons of my new bench glueing up, while my great grandfather's benchtop sat nearby.
Popular Post BonPacific
I got myself another project: sorting through all this: My wife has taken to trawling estate auctions in our area, and today we picked up this pile of wood. Most of it will undoubtably end up in the burn pile, but there's some solid chunks of turning stock, some mahogany, purple heart, and walnut. The true hidden gem was a 23"x23" 4/4 S4S dead flat board of honduran mahogany. Not a glue up, and it even still has the lumberyard sticker. Not bad for less than the price of a 2x12.

Popular Post gee-dub
Started cleaning up dad's bandsaw. Same model as I already have so no surprises. Change plug and add a paddle switch. The tires are shot due to dad's proximity to the ocean. A lot of plastics and rubber products lose their mind down there. Dad had purchased new factory tires so I pulled the wheels and changed the tires. Adjusted for co-planer and basically checked all the nuts, bolts and screws. Here's my handy-dandy belt de-tensioner. The sea air ate the original casters as well. I put steel ones on my other G0513 series so will add those for this base as well. I'll post more once I get the blade on and table aligned.
