legenddc
How thick are those slabs you cut? Seems like there's a decent size investment into it but if you're able to get free/cheap logs I'm sure you can recoup that fairly quickly once it all dries. Hope you have a big enough yard to store them all and enough space for all that sawdust!

Hope you have a big enough yard to store them all and enough space for all that sawdust! I"m cutting at 2.25" wet and they are drying to roughly 2". Some of the earlier slabs were cut at 2" wet and dried to 1_3/4". That thickness got a bit tight when trying to resaw 4/4 material and or flatten a larger chunk for use. I pretty much broke even with the walnut logs i got last year. Everything past that has been icing on the cake. Just this spring the logs I scored are ~850 BF worth of lumber. I'd say that almost doubled my inventory so I probably have around 2,000 BF milled so far. Rough cost is around $1,500 so $0.75 per BF not including time. I can see now how Cremona makes money with his band mill. The area my logs are stacked in is rough 12' x 20' so they don't take up much space. I spread the saw dust in my treed area and so far i believe it's decomposing near the rate I'm generating it. I spread my shop saw dust in the same location. So i can probably continue using that as my compost area for quite a while to come. If too much soil gets built up I suppose i could try selling the topsoil/compost but i have a feeling it's going to be a LONG time before i need to worry about that.

Popular Post Coop
We are going to Lake Charles, LA to the casino on Sunday for my wife’s bd, her request. I think I will have the winnings wired to my bank instead of hiring Brinks to bring it back!

Popular Post wtnhighlander
Finished cobbling together a tenon sled an L-fence. Both seen riding the fence extension 'saddle'. The tenon jig doesn't slide as smoothly as I like, but the home center birch plywood its made of is about as hard as styrofoam, so I'm confident it will 'wear in' quickly. The stuff is so bad, I felt compelled to add a hardwood 'wear strip' on the L-fence edge to avoid it getting dinged up.
Popular Post BonPacific
We've got the in-laws staying with us, and they're big board game fiends. After a particularly intense game of Ticket to Ride I snuck out to the shop and knocked out some nicer card-holders than come with the game. legenddc
We have those but shorter and deeper with 4 slots. My grandfather made them for his grandkids and now my dad and I have made a bunch over the years. He just showed me his latest batch yesterday. Popular Post JohnG
Finally got the right plugs to wire up my new dust collector. My shop recently gained an additional 240v circuit so that’s now dedicated to my DC.

I'm kind of excited to see what happens. So it has been 2 years and a month since i got the Chestnut trees in the mail. So far they are growing wonderfully. I originally planted 4 trees. The first year one tree was killed by Japanese Beetles consuming the entire tree. So now I'm down to 3. The trees are in 60" tubes so from 4" tall to 63" tall in 2 years that's not bad. The 3rd tree is struggling a bit and is only around 40" tall. I didn't take a picture cause it just looks like a tube. I have a few trees growing from seedlings and sometimes the dominant leader just dies and a new one has to take over. This is what I think happened with the 3rd tree. I have 2 maple seedlings, 2 walnut seedlings, and 2 black cherry seedlings that are all around 60" tall. It's fun to watch them grow during these stages.

I have several small oaks I've tried to transplant but with all the wildlife out here I've had zero success so far. The squirrels bury acorns in my bark around the house all the time so I end up with 10-12" oaks quite often since the oak wilt is killing the old trees I'd like to successfully transplant some of these. Coop
Drew, have the trees been in the 60” tubes since you planted them? Do they wrap around the tree or fit over it.

Not my actual trees I haven't planted white oak.
