Popular Post Woodworking_Hobby
So I have been working on my workbench since May of this year and I am finally in the home stretch! I was a little nervous to do a project journal along the way as I was scared all I would end up with is an expensive pile of firewood and some metal for the scrap yard. I am to the point I can actually use it as a bench so thought it was a good time to share. Just have the bottom shelf, sliding deadman, and finishing left on the build. To me this project has been proof that if you put your mind to it and just take the time you can build pretty much what you want! Sure my bench might not be heirloom quality (there are gaps at some of the M&T joints, it might not be 100% square at a spot or two, and I messed up my math on the chop) but I had a blast building it, learned a million new skills, and it is way better than those old Kreg benches I had before!!!!

Popular Post wtnhighlander
Awesome bench! More important, though, are the skills you developed in the process. You are quite justified in being proud of your accomplishment. 2
RichardA
Ain't it cool to learn that you are capable to do the new things you've learned? Welcome to the endless schooling available to you, and to us. Ya done good! By the way, don't point out what you think are fails. Only you know what and where they are. They are learning tools for you.
Chet
The bench looks great. On 12/30/2021 at 1:28 PM, RichardA said: By the way, don't point out what you think are fails. You will also learn how to fix mistakes and if you are like me you will get enough chances and get really good at fixing them to the point where even you don't see them. 1
curlyoak
Very nice bench. Nice to look at too. What will be your first project using the new bench?

Thought either of those two projects would be a good skill builder project.

pkinneb
Beautiful bench! Mine continues to be not only one of my better pieces. I use it all the time and wonder how I made it 30 years with out a proper work holding bench
Popular Post Chestnut
Nice bench it looks like you did a good job! 17 hours ago, Woodworking_Hobby said: Sure my bench might not be heirloom quality (there are gaps at some of the M&T joints, it might not be 100% square at a spot or two, and I messed up my math on the chop) but I had a blast building it, learned a million new skills, This is nearly every one of my projects. I'd bet even people at the top of their woodworking skill set are going to have problems while making something completely new to them. The trouble in the beginning is that everything is new, don't sweat it and try and forget about the defects. In 2 years you'll forget what they are and it won't matter. 11 hours ago, Woodworking_Hobby said: I am not sure yet? I am thinking either the WW shaker table or maybe the outdoor sitting bench. The stronger desire for the end result will help keep you motivated to work through the mistakes. The guild projects are also good resources for techniques, keep in mind that you don't necessarily need to use those techniques on just those projects. I reference Matt Cremona's High Boy build quite often. There are TONS of tips and tricks in that series. 4

Chet
Really nice looking, job well done. Just start using it, don't worry about dinging it, it's going to happen and there is nothing you can do to stop it. When it does you can breath a sigh of relief and get on with life. The other thing you can do is go out and give it a wap with a hammer and get on with life right now. 1
wtnhighlander
That is a beautiful piece of work, and you should be proud! But in the end, it is a tool to help you make other beautiful pieces of work, so don't fret, let it do its job.
gee-dub
Very nicely done. As wtnhighlander says, it has a job to do. I made it quite a few years before I sawed into mine just the other day. A filler strip of similar species material, a little epoxy. and some touch up with a card scraper and you can hardly see it. Of course it looks like a billboard sign to me 1

BonPacific
Honestly... Now might be the time to take a framing hammer and give it a nice whack . Just to get over the fear of dinging it up.

My non-woodworking family does not get it though and did not understand how you have to build something to help you build something ;-). It is way better than those old folding tables I had and hopefully I will not break my back as much bending over since it is now at the right height. I do like how the vices work on the bench and was surprised at once I got it built and set in its place it almost feels like I have more space than before since the old tables did not really work in the space. I am lucky enough to have a wife who says nothing when I am shopping for yet another clamp, router bit, handsaw, etc. She was puzzled at first as to why I could possibly need ANOTHER clamp (???). She is wise though and notices how much more pleasant I am to live with when I get to visit my shop more often. Sometimes I walk in there and just stand for a while and I feel more relaxed about the world. 4
BillyJack
Turned out nice. I guess you need to decide if you want to make shop furniture or home furmiture..

My wife has a horse though, so woodworking is the cheap hobby by comparison. 2
