wtnhighlander
I think you got ash, Coop. I've seen maple with such visible grain lines, as it isn't a 'ring porous' species. But that looks different from the ash around my neck of the woods, so I can't say for sure.
Chestnut
9 hours ago, Coop said: The ends are painted blue. Is there a universal color for paint colors for different woods? No the color really only means something to some saw mills some of the time. IIRC from the lumber industry podcast different mills use different colors for various reasons. Some mills all use the same color. I'd bet a lot of money that's ash. Not sure which ash, my gut guess is green, but for me it can be hard to differentiate between the different ash species through pictures.
Coop
Uvalde Tx. So sad. Not sure what the answer is but something needs to be done, bilaterally. My worst concern as an elementary student was homework and the principal’s office.
Tpt life
No way an 18 year old would be admitted in our middle school without a check. Not sure how this one got into an elementary.

I'll leave it at that so this doesn't become a rambling, angry rant.

I'll start by asking something: What is the best place in Ohio to get a burger? In Cleveland in the nineties we walked into a place called the boneyard. Everyone in the place stopped what they were doing and looked right at us as soon as we opened the door. We got scared, turned around.. then after stopping at the "steak and steam" at closing time, then being told "but the guys are still out back" we ended up eating nothing that night. Not that there's anything wrong with that
phinds
@CoopThat looks more like ash than hickory/pecan but ash is quite hard/dense (American ash anyway). Can you send me a sample to evaluate?
Popular Post Coop
@phinds, I took the remaining boards that I hadn’t broken down, back to the lumber yard on Friday and they verified that the had given me ash by mistake and apologized. They replaced these boards with soft maple and charged me the ash price. Luckily, the boards that I had broken down will all become panels and only the edges will be seen. I will edge band them with the same maple that the two outside end panels and door frames are made from. Thanks for your help! 3

Coop
Thanks Dave. I just wish I could have made this out of solid maple. I guess whoever gets this when I’m gone won’t notice the difference when they roast marshmallows over it.
Popular Post treeslayer
I’m confident that won’t happen Coop, our kids play a game of who gets what, I just tell them they will have to wait a LONG time to find out
Popular Post treeslayer
So I see a bird disappear above my license plate on my Colorado, turns out there is a 1” X 3” hole from the factory I assume to let any water out in the bottom of the tailgate, well 3 hours later and 3 shopping bags full of birds nest material and after removing a panel on the inside of the tailgate it’s clean now, I’ll silicone a piece of fiberglass screen in place so hopefully it won’t happen again, just a heads up for any Colorado owners here, a real pain to clean out.
Chet
It is amazing how animals will find and get into spaces that we didn't even know existed.
treeslayer
They sure can, they must have been coming and going for a long time, there were 3 dead ones and one live one and it gives a new definition to the word stink

JohnG
A tractor shed is on the list, but I’ve been hoping the prices would come back down soon. Wishful thinking though.
Coop
I thought this was a pretty cool idea. Not only the veneer lamination but the use of the threaded rod to spread the glue.
wtnhighlander
I've seen the threaded rod trick somewhere before, and tried it myself. It does make for a nice layer of glue, but isn't the easiest tool to spread glue with. And really hard to clean off. Good idea on the leg laminations. I bet a small corner chamfer would completely obscure any sign of a glue line
Gary Beasley
Might try a section of bandsaw blade to do the same thing.
JohnG
I like using brayers, but you do have to be diligent in washing them off before the glue dries. I have a variety of widths to select from.
legenddc
Hope everyone had a good 4th of July! I was at the beach with my family and some extended family for the week. Was going great until some sort of stomach bug got most of us. Definitely not ready to be back at work and things will be pretty busy for the foreseeable future. Nice to come back to a mostly clean shop though. Hoping to start sneaking in some time down there and get back to my TV stand. Have a bunch of other things I need to focus on though so it will be slow progress.
