Popular Post tperson
It wasn't this past weekend, but last weekend I gifted The Department of War and Finance the third installment of her Christmas gift. I started with a gallon of Dexcool and a thermostat, followed that up 2 weeks later with a set of shocks and struts, and 4 days after that, a brand new...radiator. Yup, we Nebraskans know how to treat a lady! Her question once I finished: did you fix the heated seats?! My response: no, I'm saving that for your birthday. Actually, the radiator wasn't bad (price or to install)...about 3 hours to install and cleanup.

I think i had to do a bit more than just cut a few boards. It was an entire project with a lot of sanding etc. I've also had the same effect with pine but not kiln dried pine. I Worked some air dried material and it hung in my DC for a long time. Made my shop smell like pinesol.

Popular Post legenddc
My son walked around Rockler smelling all the wood trying to find if they all smell like the cedar boards in my parent’s basement.
Popular Post Chestnut
I'm interested in what our kids are going to say when they are older. For some reason i have a feeling at 5 our daughter is going to be confused "You mean your dad bought your furniture from a store? Your dad didn't make it all in your basement? That's weird." 2 1
Popular Post Coop
I had my first cataract surgery yesterday. My follow up visit this morning to get the patch removed revealed that my sight in that eye went from 20/140 to 20/20. On the way home, I could easily read the street signs way before getting to them!

Then COVID happened and he had to close one eye to see for 3 months. Hope you recover quickly and your shop isn’t too bright now! My dad ended up needing reading safety glasses.
wtnhighlander
Congratulations, @Coop! My father's experience was very similar. He went from vision so poor that it noticably affected his artwork, to seeing clearly without glasses at all. He did need to use readers for up-close stuff, after a little while.

Coop
Thanks Dave. Doc just said to not bend over and pick up a 40 lb. bag of dog food. But, I’ll probably give it a week and knock out a couple of 6 oz. reindeer.

I just got over knee surgery and now my left hip has been giving me trouble. It’s better today., Just when you think you’ll get back in the shop, life delays you again.. Popular Post wtnhighlander
I hung a quickly-made floating shelf, for a certain young man's 'other' collectables. Made from more of that maple cross tie that Spanky foisted off on me. It is a bit thick, because there is only a single stud behind it. I fabricated a bracket from 2" angle, which gave enough space to drive 2 screws vertically, and prevent the shelf from rotating.

Popular Post wtnhighlander
Working on a new 'fill time' project this morning. I had this think piece of 'cookie', bandsaw cut to a rough circle. It was tapered, so step 1 was to scribe a line parallel to the 'flat' edge, and saw away the wedge. Too big for my bandsaw, so out came Grandpa's hand saw, followed by hand planing it pretty flat and smooth. Next, I started making it into a smoother cylinder. No lathe, so just planing to a line. When there is no time crunch, I really enjoy hand tool work. I call this particular method 'shop heat', since it was about 30*F in there this morning!

This reminds me of the piece of cedar 6x6 that I take camping with me, along with a block plane. I like to sit by the fire an plane off shavings to use for tinder (no, not that tinder). I've been shaving away at it for several summers and its now about a 4" diameter log. It takes surprisingly little shavings to get a fire started, using no matches of course. My grand daughter was building fires using no matches by the time she was about 14.

Coop
Ross, did you just place it on your bs against the fence and start cutting the edges/points to get it that round?
wtnhighlander
Ken, for the rough rounding, I drew a circle on top and free-handed at the bandsaw. Because the piece was still wedge-shaped at that point, the circle was a bit distorted into an ellipse. Now that I have a flat face with a center mark, I can use a centering jig to cut the circle true at the BS. But the plane kept me a lot warmer...

Tom King
Fixed a heat pump that had quit altogether for $6.61. The last time that happened and I called a pro, several years ago, he charged me $250 to replace a bad capacitor on another unit. This morning paid for the meter I bought to be able to do such testing myself. https://www.supplyhouse.com/Fieldpiece-SC640-SC640-Loaded-Clamp-Meter-w-Swivel-Head-True-RMS I have a Pro account there, so I get free shipping. I ordered another backup. https://www.supplyhouse.com/Titan-Pro-TRCFD455-45-5-MFD-Round-Dual-Motor-Run-Capacitor-440-370V
Popular Post wtnhighlander
After truing up the round at the bandsaw, and cutting the top face parallel to the bottom at the tablesaw (a sketchy proposition, at best), I switched back to hand tools to separate the 'lid' section of my proposed box from the body. I used a pair of marking gauges to lay out parallel lines, and sawed a kerf between them. I used the blade of my 6" combo square to set the spacing, and it worked perfectly, so that the hand saw kerf has no chip out. Now the tedious task of sawing it completely through....
