Popular Post wdwerker Posted March 22, 2018 Popular Post Report Share Posted March 22, 2018 Just finished full size drawings of 2- 4' wide x 10' tall bookcases to go on either side of a 7' wide Fireplace wall. Arches will be flanked with triangles with a recessed flat panel and crown across the top. We drew the arches with concentric lines to indicate the moldings. Then I stated playing with how to make the extremely long mitered joints above the top of the arch. We measured every 4" to 6" across and down to each curve to get them symmetrical . Roughly cut on the bandsaw then sanded to the line on my big belt sander. It's going to be 9 ft in the air and under at least 4 coats of waterbourne pre cat tinted to a semi dark grey the decorator chose. After the first coat of primer it will be easy to fill or caulk any tiny gaps. This whole job is getting a furniture grade satin paint finish. The client was impressed to see a 4ft wide x 9 1/2 ft tall drawing of one bookcase and a 7 ft wide x 10 ft tall drawing of the fireplace Mantle & the arched top which will frame a big flatscreen TV. I'm planning on segmenting the arches and template routing them after cutting rough with the saber saw. Just using poplar cause it's getting painted. I draw most odd or complex pieces full sized. Usually just work from sketches and plenty of math for everyday straight projects. Loft is 12 x 30 , stairs up to loft sure beats the ladder I had in my old shop. Main outfeed /assembly table is 50 x 120. Outfeed for my sliding tablesaw is 36 x 84. So yea it's a decent size. It can be hard to photograph large drawings on ply / MDF. I took a few this evening of the fireplace mantle. The 5" brown MDF around the firebox opening is the stone . 1 5/8 x 10 1/2 x 80 mantle shelf Goes across the top. Base board to match the house will wrap the bottom of the columns. She drew up the basic plan of the arches over the 3 sections. The client supplied several pictures they liked certain features of. I measured the whole area for hours so that I could come up with a final design that would cleanly fit around the existing walls , fireplace etc. That chandelier will either get raised or replaced. We are building a giant kit to cover the entire 15 ft wide wall, Crown, wall panels, casework, Mantle and trim to cover any seams. We will replace the existing crown in all 3 areas with the same crown but in front of all the cases and panels . We will have to cope all the inside corners to the crown that will remain. But everything we build will be sprayed , sanded and sprayed again until it's smooth as a .....well you get my point. 4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A tariff on Chinese plywood was connected enacted after a lawsuit from the US producers claimed dumping/government subsidies. So now the domestic ply prices have shot up. Cost me at least $130 more than it would have in January. 3/8 bending plywood. It comes in " Barrel " or " pipe " versions. I got "Barrel" to make the curved inside top of the bookcases. It is made with only 3 layers of Italian poplar. There it a definite good and bad face. When the good face is inside it compresses and the bad face out opens up with fine cracks everywhere. They carry oversized sheets that let you cut parts without loosing the kerf each time ! 48 1/2 x 96 1/2 , the bending ply is oversized too. Very few voids in the core. It's made by " Murphy " in Oregon. Even the 1/4" ply is oversized. Also got 70 bd ft of poplar to make all the trim & arches from. I just wanted to let everyone know before they went into sticker shock the next time they buy plywood. Your probably not going to see oversized sheets at a home center .
