Popular Post Tom King
Will do! I'm about exactly a year after mine last March, and I'm like a new man now. I can offer my experience with rehab for the few weeks after. Have someone there to help put his socks on after the surgery. They just handed me my clothes, and told me to get dressed. I would not have had any bruising if that had been handled better. Movement lifting the leg on that side is what causes bruising. I wish I had known before the day before, or I would have had a lot of advice to give. I didn't take any pain medications after that which was given to me for surgery, so I had no digestive trouble. If I had known exactly what to expect, I would have mounted a handle hanging from the ceiling to help get out of bed. Surgery side needs to be up to get out of bed. Bend knees up, and slide feet off of bed. It's hard for someone to help you without engaging the abs. I had to tell this story three times to the doctors and nurses at Duke, as they had never thought about recommending things like how to get out of bed. The handle would have made it issue free. The only other bruising I had was at day five, when without thinking about it in the shower, I picked that leg up to rest the foot on the seat in the shower to dry that leg. Don't do that. Walking helps a LOT. Walk often. I have much more, but it's probably too late now. Please make sure he reads this tonight. I'll check back later tonight, in case he sees this and has questions. They gave me three choices for anesthesia. I chose the one they use for colonoscopies, and would again. I was wide awake a few hours after, with no left over effects, and I really never had any kind of pain. The other choices were total, and spinal-no thanks on either. edited to add: I see you "liked" this response, so I know you read it. May you have as good looking nurses as I did! I specifically requested that they use no mesh unless absolutely necessary, and they were able to repair a pretty large hernia with no mesh.

Popular Post treeslayer
Thanks guys, and great advice Tom, I had one fixed about 4 years ago so I kind of know what I’m in for. I plan on whining twice what it’s worth and looking forward to being taken care of by my great wife until she catches on. I will give you guys a report when the drugs wear off.

wnaziri
Good Luck Dave. Fortunately, hernia repair is fairly routine surgery these days. Curious: Laparoscopic or open repair? They are both good methods. I could also give you advice but I would have to send you a bill .

Ya know Wade i forgot to ask, it turns out the Dr. is a woodworker and a damn good one, we spent most of the office visit sharing pictures of wood stuff. He might have said but i forgot. 5 minutes ago, wdwerker said: Maybe you will get some cute nurses . I haven't had much luck in that area Steve, at my age i'll settle for talented, but cute wouldn't hurt my feelings either. 34 minutes ago, K Cooper said: Hope the surgeons knife is sharp and clean thanks Coop, i hope the knife is at least as sharp as the chisel i cut my thumb with! In fact I'm expecting him to stop by this morning while your in surgery so I can take him and introduce him to a new sawyer.

I know of a surgeon who likes to get up early while on vacation, read WoodTalk, and comment on other woodworkers' hernia surgery. Go figure! There must be something about woodworking and surgery. difalkner
Had one done in 1986 - 7 staples to close the opening, a week of lying down, second week of slow moving - long recovery. Had another one done 3 years ago - minimal entry, minimal recovery relative to the earlier one but still kept me down for most of a week. No fun in either case but definitely better now than when I had the first one done. Praying for you, Dave! David
