RichardA
Has anyone heard from Shane lately? Is he to busy during the warm months to associate with us? Or did all his systainers fall on him and he can't get out?
Brendon_t
Last I heard he was pretty busy with work and a house sell/buy.
Woodenskye
I was just wandering what has happened with our favorite Canuck. I know he was looking at selling his house and finding a new place with a place for horses and a shop, so maybe that has taken up his time. Popular Post wdwerker
He got tired of Eric crapping on too many people. A couple other members expressed similar reasons for leaving. I usually express my opinion but qualify it as one way among many, not the only way.

If you ignored his 40 grit personality and occasional ranting, he was a pretty decent guy. Some people just can't see past the 40 grit.

I don't know who else left the forum because of me, but it's never my intention to drive anyone away. I have firm opinions about things and I tend not to sugar coat. Some people find that offensive, I call it telling the truth. It's never my goal to hurt feelings, but if I'm asked for my opinion, I give it. If you think you look fat in that dress, you probably shouldn't ask me. I see mediocrity everywhere, and I can't help but point it out. Yeah, I'm 40 grit. We're all big boys and we're here to talk woodworking. It's a grown up sport. As to Shane specifically, I don't ever remember crapping on him. I know I've expressed my distaste for Festool fanboyism on a number of occasions and maybe that got him butt hurt. But Shane is one of the best woodworkers on this forum and I have nothing but respect for him. He's got good taste, he knows how to build, and I enjoyed his contributions. So if he left because I offended his ego bone somehow, then I guess that sounds pretty thin skinned to me. Anyway, I do apologize to him and everyone else for being a little abrasive at times...it's my personality. I got it from my dad and at almost 40 years old there's not much I can do to change it at this point. It can get a little out of control when I'm stressed out with work and don't get enough shop time...which has been the case for the last six months. I hope I contribute enough positively to offset the no-nonsense delivery. I have enough friends around here to assume that I do.

True, but you always back it up with tons of great info. Not sure anyone (smart) would ever question you on a knowledge level. I have always enjoyed learning from you. 1 hour ago, Eric. said: Well if that's the case then I find that unfortunate. I am here to learn and I only learn by getting straight to the point and not beating around the bush. Not sure why people get so butthurt these days ... thats part of the problem with our culture. Everyone is so sensitive and needs safe zones and words hurt. Suck it up, have an issue confront, dont sit back and cry in a corner and then go shoot up a public place because you feel misunderstood, but dont try do anything about it. In my many years on this earth (32 ) I dont like the way everything is going. Popular Post Immortan D
I would never make a rant against Eric because I learned a lot from him and he was always willing to help me whenever I PM'ed him about whatever. Popular Post Tom Cancelleri
Eric has been a great resource for me. When I need an honest opinion on something or to ask how something looks or what would be a better way to do something I know I'm getting an truthful opinion and good advice. Props to Eric for keeping it real.
Popular Post bgreenb
I've been away from the forum for a while because I've been busy with a few side projects. I still lurk and PM with some members. Felt I had to chime in here. If Shane did leave because of Eric, then I'd echo everything Eric said in his pitch perfect response. I enjoy Shane's presence, respect the hell out of his talent and knowledge, and hope he returns. Life is full of people you may not get along with or find abrasive - taking your ball and going home is never the answer, IMO. As far as Eric - he is on a very short list of people at the top of the pyramid on this forum in terms of who I've learned the most from and whose presence I have enjoyed, and that's to say nothing of his talent, attention to detail, and most importantly, expectations of himself. I think part of E's "suffer no fools" attitude sometimes comes from the fact that he demands that absolute best from himself and gets frustrated when others don't do the same, make compromises, or try to take shortcuts. I interpret his attitude as "tough love" - a genuine desire to make you better. And it's called "tough LOVE" for a reason. As some others have mentioned, I think you'll find that if you ever have a question or need help with something, you'll find Eric is VERY generous with his time and knowledge if you contact him in a public thread or in private. I've sought his counsel privately countless times and he never disappoints. Sorry for the ball washing, but I felt some balls needed washing. ...part of what's kept me away from the forum has been building an entire kitchen full of cabinets for the first time. I've asked Eric COUNTLESS questions definitely to the point of annoyance. I could almost hear the grumbling in his head about the four P's that shall not be named* from all the way across the Internet...but he patiently answered all my questions. He's a great resource here and I hope that people don't let butthurtedness get in the way of learning. *plywood, pocket screws, paint, and pine.
Art
I'm pretty new here, and haven't posted a lot, but do check in on the forums several times a week to see what's going on. If some people have left because of Eric, that's a shame. Having said that, Eric's responses to some comments or threads absolutely come across a childish. There is no doubt he knows what he is doing, and I've learned a lot from him (and others), but when conversing as adults, as simple courtesy goes a long way. Accepting that there are differing opinions is part of dealing with people and engaging in an adult conversation. That is sometimes lacking... Again, I think as you get to know Eric, you'll see everything I wrote above. And until that point, I think he deserves leeway from new members while they get a feel for the place. Popular Post Llama
It is a shame if that's the reason he left. Darn good woodworker, and someone I have a great deal of respect for. Although Eric and I have gotten into it a few times (bench dogs, plane weight, etc) You name it, and I've probably battled with him on it when opinions differ. However, I know for damn sure when I ask him something I will get a no BS answer and that's what I appreciate. E never uses 10 words when 3 will do. There are very few people on here that will give it straight. So, even though you're a jerk, thanks for keeping it real E
BonPacific
Judging from his profile, Shane does still log in occasionally (last Thursday). Tom Cancelleri
It's not impossible that Shane is currently connecting up 100 Festool SysRock speakers via bluetooth to rock your socks off in his next power carving video.

Popular Post wtnhighlander
I feel confident that Shane has just been extra busy. He doesn't strike me as the type to take his ball and go home because of anything someone said. As for@Eric. if you think people get ruffled over the mannerisms in his posts, go check the forum leader board. His contributions are consistently at the top.
