treeslayer
Always a tough call to leave the old homestead Ross and not an easy decision but having them closer to family is the right call. You built that well right to last this long, good job

Moving the last of their things out of the old house, I noticed this decorative 'well house' I built for them, almost 30 years ago. I made the windlass from a red oak branch, using an axe, a hand saw, a chisel and a drill. Square pegs and wedges held the handle to the 'drum'. One of the prospective buyers tried to turn it and the handle finally gave up. Shingle should have been replaced 15 years ago. Even though they built this house after I left the nest, I still have a lot of memories to leave behind. That's a cool relic! The shingles on the back of our house looked like that before Hurricane Isabel came through, and took them off. I had replaced the front roof several years before that. The back can't be seen from anwhere but in the woods behind our house. I think I replaced the synthetic roofing paper back there three times, over the next several years, until the next hurricane was headed towards us, and I was up there a few hours before it hit finishing up the standing seam metal roof.

I don’t think they had planned on our exact field, but probably had a general area in mind. They always have a “chase vehicle” that follows them to wherever they land and picks them up. They started to land in the next field over, but when they got down they realized there were a bunch of bulls in the field and they didn’t want to take their chances 1
Popular Post Mick S
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta was earlier this month. It's such a cool sight to see 500+ balloons launching in less than a couple of hours. This year they had a 150 foot tall Christ the Redeemer balloon. Brought a whole new meaning to mass ascension. I can't imagine walking out my back door and looking up to see a 150 foot tall Jesus hovering over me. 3

Chestnut
Haven't been getting much shop time lately. Today i solved a frustration of mine. I hated that the top of the vac always collected hand plane shavings. I also never liked that there wasn't a flat place to set down the domino or sander. I had an AH HA moment and cut a piece of plywood to fit. Now it's a perfect dust extractor.

Popular Post SawDustB
I put up some new shop lights last night. There's a running joke that about once a year I add a new light. Anyway, I put up two of these LED panels that added around 6000 lumens and eliminated some shadows. There's also an under cabinet light below the new tool cabinet. I'm satisfied with the result, although I always hate any job that involves spending time in the attic. I'm going to be finding bits of insulation around for weeks.
Popular Post Mark J
Today is the last day for this class at the Marc Adams school. It's been a great experience, but the week started last Friday at the Ohio Valley Woodturning Symposium, so I'm on day eight of a continuous diet of wood chips. I'm kind of "full" actually and looking forward to getting home . The idea of mowing the lawn suddenly seems strangely appealing.

Popular Post Tom King
Today, and yesterday afternoon, I've been jostled around by a little mini-excavator. Long story on our point, but the short, current story is that I was approached by a wedding planner to rent it for a wedding. It's a bit over 2 acres, with almost a quarter mile of shoreline. I was thinking they might offer a couple of hundred dollars, but they came up with 15 times that, right off. Long story shortened, it's now booked every weekend next April, but I have to get it resentable. A local guy with big Bobcat, and dump truck could help, but no excavator operator was available any time soon, so I rented one to run myself. There is a little brick building on it that had four bathrooms in it at some point, but was gutted before we acquired it. I had planned on tearing it down, but never got around to it. Now, the plan is to make it back into a restroom building. One Oak tree was growing really close to the slab it's sitting on, so I'm sure it would ruin the slab at some point, so I decided to take it down. Some of the roots had to be under the slab, and I wanted to pull them out. Rather than cut the tree, and dig the stump up, I decided to use the weight of the tree to topple it. The only mini-excavator available for rent was some really small one. I'd be surprised if it weighs 4,000 lbs. I dug down about 7' deep around the root ball, and pushed it with the little excavator (as in the picture). It went according to plan, and did even pull out any big roots from under the building. I had to dig a ramp to be able to roll it out of the hole with the little excavator. If it hadn't been such a rough ride, for a couple of days, it would have been fun. It took about an hour to dig around that one, and a number of big Pine stumps also took about 45 minutes each. There was another Oak tree, out of the picture, that it got hung up on, allowing me to get off the machine, and take the picture. It was not much trouble to roll if off the other tree. edited to add: It's heavier than I thought. I looked up the specs on it, and it weighs a little over 7,000 pounds. They must be using spent Uranium for counterweight material. I don't know where they hide it. It seems like a little toy. http://katoces.com/product/35n-2-mini-excavator/ The last one I rented weighed 8,500 lb., and there was a noticeable difference, even in pulling this one on the trailer. I asked for the smallest bucket, which was a 12" wide one, and I don't think this machine could handle anything bigger.
