Popular Post Chestnut
Didn't technically come in the mail but i bought a new router. I've been eyeing up one of these for use with a track and because i hear they are good routers. Got a gift card credit card from work because we had a good year. I may have also used some wedding gift money (with approval from accounting).

Probably won't use them in the shop but for yardwork they will be great tried them out with the blower today and they work well. So that was my Christmas gift to myself and they came in the mail just last week. I think they're decent. The sound quality is good enough. They're rugged and fairly comfortable. I'm glad they are making a muff, as I really don't like sticking things in my ears. I may end up buying a pair for doing yardwork. Or maybe I'll get some 3M worktunes to see how they compare.

Popular Post Tom King
I bought a couple of refurbished Makita routers from CPO. Only one came. I've bought refurbished tools from them before, and could only tell that the box had been opened. This first one had obviously been used, maybe once, but it runs smoothly, and appears to have nothing wrong with it. I forget what the deal was, but it was good to start with, and then extra $25 off, and free shipping with the rest of the order. So far, this one is all that has come from that order. No need to ask how many routers I have, because I don't know. I was building some stuff for the dogroom using Formica, and having to switch bits. In the process, I found out that I was still using the same router bits for edging the Formica that I had used in the 1970's, when we built countertops out of it. The bits were still cutting fine, but making a lot of noise. When I realized they were those old router bits, I ordered a couple of new ones, and the difference is remarkable. The old ones had never been used a lot of times, before switching to Corian for countertops in the '80's, and '90's, but had been used a few more times, over the years, for small jobs with shop stuff.

Mark J
I don't know, John. Did she say how she's gonna deliver these bees to you . Seriously, I, too, would like to know more as you get farther along.
Popular Post JohnG
Haha she spoke with the queen and invited them here. No, we took a beekeeping class together in college. She reached out to the professor who said he would send us a colony from the school’s apiary. Probably when one of the existing colonies prepares to swarm he will capture them in a nuc and mail that to us. Or intentionally split a colony and give us one.
Coop
John, I have wanted to do this for years but was afraid they wouldn’t “stay in my yard” and sting a neighbors kid. Recently I was assured by someone familiar with bee keeping that was not a concern. What does your hive kit consist of?

Recently I was assured by someone familiar with bee keeping that was not a concern. What does your hive kit consist of? Honey bees are generally very docile. If you get unlucky and have a generally mean colony, you just find and kill the queen and when they rear a new one, chances are they will be much nicer. The whole colony's disposition is dictated by the queen. Honey bees often die after stinging, so they certainly don't want to sting unless they feel that they need to. Some people see a swarm of bees and fear that they are aggressive when they swarm, but that's the opposite of what is true. When they swarm, they don't have a home to protect so they are not aggressive at all. You can walk right through the swarm and have almost zero chance of being stung. I once walked through a swarm where they were beginning to gather on a tree branch. I grabbed the branch and shook them off of it and into a box. No veil, no gloves, no hat, etc. Yellow jackets (which are wasps and not bees) give bees a bad reputation. The kit she got me comes with the sides of the hive boxes and frame parts, with joinery, rabbets, and handles already cut. You just have to glue/nail them together, install the "foundation" (which is a base layer of wax that the bees build the comb on, paint, and then add bees. If I add more colonies down the road, I'll hope to make them. It's pretty simple construction, but not something I currently have time for. Coop
I have a small horse watering trough with an old hand water pump as a fish pond that we have water lilies in. This past summer, there have been no less than a dozen bees on the lilies, drinking. The bee friend suggests that there is probably a hive close bye and that I will probably get all the cross pollination that I need for my vegetable garden. It would still be neat to have a hive! Mick S
I'd like to follow this also. Any chance of moving it to a separate thread so we could find it more easily?
Popular Post JohnG
I’ll start a thread when I start to assemble the hive boxes. Then if people are interested I can continue to add to it regarding managing the hive and extracting honey, etc.

Yes, but are considered a nuisance because they also will eat trash food. Other pollinators are less likely to clash with us in that way. JohnG
One benefit to yellow jackets is that they do prey on grubs and beetles, but overall I prefer not to have them around. They are not as effective at pollinating as honey bees are.
RJS
Hi JohnG, looking forward to a beekeeping thread! I started beekeeping a couple of years ago and the whole family is really getting into it now. I built most of my woodenware, it probably costs me more but allows me to hang out in the shop woodworking with my kids more too. There's no end of learning in either woodworking or beekeeping, they both can provide a bit of income to (partially) offset their expenses and for me in Canada, they are both seasonal, wood in the winter, bees in the summer.
Popular Post Chestnut
Not woodworking related but i injured my wrist and have been out of the shop as a result for the last week and probably the next week or two to allow it to heal. Bought one of these because it was inexpensive ($150), was simple, lightweight, and bagged. I don't want to clean filters or canisters. Reading reviews on vacuums left me disappointed in all the other major brands that cost nearly 10x more than this. Some of these other brands make festool look downright cheap. It doesn't have tools but i have a small handheld vac for that, or in serious cases i use my CT vac. I used it on our entry rugs that have some embedded debris that our other vacs haven't been able to remove. This one got them out and made the rugs look a lot cleaner. We usually replace the entry rugs after a year or two because they get abused this might extend their useful life a bit. I do all the vacuuming

We tried two top review brands and were real disappointed with how fast they degraded for the price paid. We went with one in the same price range, I think just a touch over $150, as your new one and it has already given us half the service life as the ones we paid 5X the price.

It's replacing a 25 year old Kenmore, which is still working. It just developed a really loud squeal which was loud even through hearing protection. Bags were also getting harder to find for the Kenmore or more expensive at least. 3 bags are $10 for the Kenmore where the oreck is $15 for 25. Though at the rate the bags fill I'd have to live to be 150 to make up the difference of the vacuum cost....

I've been happy with my Dysons. I still have the DC07 I bought back in 2004, and the only thing I've had to do is replace a belt and take the canister apart and clean it really well. We like the bagless because we have pets. But if you don't fill the bags up regularly with fur, I'd prefer a bag. I don't know if the new Dysons are quite as well made as they used to be. But the new cordless vacs intrigue me. Thought they might be nice for cleaning the staircase and our main level which is mostly hardwood floors. Haven't bought one yet, maybe in a year or two. We'll see.
