What did you do today?

House was built in 1828.  That was the way they typically built them around here.  The stack is only one brick thick, with no liners back then, and laid with lime mortar, which is a lot softer, and more fragile than the Portland cement based mortar we use today.  Someone, back then, figured out that fewer houses burned down if the chimneys were built like this.

I rebuilt that particular chimney, from the level of the middle of the second story windows and up, in 2008.  It's modeled exactly after the only one, out of three, intact ones on the other end of the house.

I got called to fix that roof (another type of problem than this one) in 2007, and they kept us busy for another 2-1/2 years working on that house.

It has been so warm this winter, that 11° tonight will feel brutal...even though that is super normal and even balmy most years.
