treeslayer
I always said a man should have 3 main things, a pretty girl, a dog and a truck. you do have a truck don't you Tom? great picture, you're a lucky man!
Tom King
She would get mad if she knew I posted that picture- no makeup, with puffy eyes, and hair just out of bed that morning, but it's one of my favorite pictures. That dog was just passing through our yard that morning, and we had two stray farm dogs show up who looked a lot like that in years past, that ended up staying with us. That one was walking with someone on our road. I found her on the side of the road, one night after midnight, in a broken down MGB, when I was away from home helping a friend work on a 1777 house in 1977. We've been together ever since. That picture was taken a couple of years ago.

Popular Post Catco
I made a couple things today: I work in a large format sign and graphics shop, and I operate all the cutting machines. I also have the "privilege" of being the "Lighting Guy," meaning I wire and set up all the lights in various sized light boxes. We moved into a different building and I no longer have any storage space, and have smallish wire shelves. Blech. So I designed a set of adjustable storage cubbies for all the various sizes of lights I have to use, out of 1/2" baltic birch plywood I had lying around I designed everything so that it will fit on any of the racks I have been allocated, whipped it all together, and threw it all on the 80"x120" CNC router I operate. I cut 1/2" dados with a 1/2" spiral upcut endmill for the dividers and slots on the back and bottom with a 1/8" spiral upcut endmill to secure everything to the wire racks, in whichever orientation I want to. I also routed holes for where I was planning on screwing it all together. Close up view of some of the details. And the finished product. I've made 2 so far, and need to make about 3-4 more of them. May make a smaller version for the home shop or little bits and bobs for my @ work shop. And second thing I made was a business sign for my barber. Simple sign I cut once again at work using 1/2" baltic birch plywood that I had lying around, only this time I used the 150W laser cutter/engraver. Etched all the text, then went back to it with a mini blowtorch and made it a bit more artsy and darkened everything up. Close up view of the burninating. And finished product before hanging hardware. Only going to be a single sided sign, hung inside a window so no finishing was required. Enjoy!

Pondhockey
Got the back end of a cedar burl flattened, finally. Now trying to decide how to finish (working with Western Red Cedar scraps.) Early wood and late wood take up stain differently (reversing the light/dark areas - what's the term for that?)
Popular Post wdwerker
Staining something that's not going to stain well ! The early wood is more like a sponge. The late wood is denser and stiffer. Few conifer woods stain well. Using a pre-stain or dye might work better. I have gotten good results spraying a diluted dye in thin layers to build up to the desired intensity of color. I spray a slightly different pattern each coat and overlap the spray pattern consistently. If you can't spray try a layer of sealer first then build color with a gel stain. The sealer prevents absorption so the color layers are on top of the sealer. You must put a good finish layer over the color to protect it from being scratched up.
Pondhockey
Thanks, Werker. The gel stain and dye were both on my mind. I don't have a sprayer, but have done something similar to what you suggest on a previous project using Van Dyke Brown glaze over a pre-coat. I'll be in the big city in a few days and will pick up some gel stain.
Chestnut
I shoveled my yard onto my driveway today. I figured it was time for it to go back the other way. I removed and melted a lot of the large piles that are problem areas for shoveling.= s now if we get more snow i have places to put it again. 1

We get lots of snow in N. Idaho but nothing like the winds and snow drifts of the East.
Popular Post Pondhockey
Went for a snowshoe in the hood, moved the Traeger into the shop so I could convince the customer support that I really needed a new igniter ("hot rod'), dinner at friiend's house (snow plow hadn't gotten to their road. a foot on the road, but also at at the ski area.) Still experimenting with staining softwoods; got to see what my friend has done at his house. Now kicking back and enjoying you guys.

That is one serious smoker you have there Chet. I got into it a few years ago but haven't strayed to far from the usual chicken, ribs, bacon wrapped scallops and shrimp. looking to try brisket this year. I use quite a few recipies off of Jeff Phillips site Smoking-meat.com

Nothing better than a generous pile of pastrami with pepper jack cheese melted over the top on a hard roll. I just ate and now I'm hungry. Damn you Chet! Damn you! 1
